Graduate Admissions Criteria - TargetX

Begin by finding your program in TWU's Program, Majors & Degrees listings to see if your program has additional admission requirements and application deadlines prior to applying.  (This information is for all programs. The application deadline for your specific program will be listed in the Program Requirements.  Use that deadline as it applies below.  (Example: if a program only admits once a year and has a Fall deadline for 2023 of March 1, you would need to be looking to apply to the next deadline for Fall 2024.)

1. Apply online.
   Apply to Graduate Programs according to the start semester and application portals below:
   
   • Spring 2024 - All programs apply via ApplyTexas EXCEPT applicants to the College of Business, Child Life, or Child Development master's programs or the Child Development and Early Education PhD program who should apply via the TWU Online Graduate Application Portal.
     • Note: When applying through ApplyTexas, you will need to submit any required Documents directly to the program website.
   • Summer & Fall 2024 - All graduate programs apply via the TWU Online Graduate Application Portal. Required documents will be asked for and uploaded into the application.
     
     
2. Pay the application fee.
   The $50 fee, ($75 fee for International applicants), which applies to all new and returning applicants can be paid by:
   • Credit card - Online through the portal you applied on (either ApplyTexas or TWU's Online Graduate Application).
   • Certified check or money order by mail or electronically - payable to TWU, sent by mail to:
     TWU Admissions Processing, 301 Research Circle, Room 220; Denton, Texas 76204
     (include your full name and ID number).
   • Cash (no personal checks) - Pay at the Bursar's Office. After paying, bring the receipt to Admissions Processing (2nd floor of GRB).
   • Fee Waivers - Graduate applicants who are certified McNair Scholars are eligible for a McNair Scholar application Fee waiver. Submit the request using the Application Fee Waiver Submission Form.
     
     
3. Submit transcripts to TWU.
   • Domestic Applicants must submit official transcripts for each college or university attended, both undergraduate and graduate. See the Information on Transcripts website for more details.
   • International Applicants are now required to provide an evaluation prepared by a NACES or AICE member evaluation service. International transcripts should not be sent directly to TWU.  See the International Admission website for more details.

Admission Requirements

• A GPA of 3.0 or higher on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work OR on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work plus any post-baccalaureate or graduate hours. The Graduate School requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all graduate coursework.
• Complete the Application to Education of the Deaf Graduate Program. The program application includes a letter of intent, and a video submission introducing yourself in sign. As the program seeks to provide each student with an individualized mentoring experience, the letter of intent should include:
  
  • the reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in education of the deaf,
  • a professional area of research interest or specialty, and
  • identification of two faculty members who have similar areas of interest.
  • Sign proficiency as demonstrated in a brief video providing the YouTube, Vimeo or link to video portfolio with the program application.
• Email addresses for three individuals familiar with your academic capabilities, who can provide letters of recommendation to be requested through and submitted into the application. 
• Off-campus/online students must have access to a school for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Discuss what characteristics or personality traits you posses that would make you a successful member of the healthcare-based team. What sets you apart from the other applicants?" 
   • The names, positions/titles, employers, and email addresses of three individuals who have agreed to provide you with letters of recommendation to the Graduate program.    • an indication of your professional goals;
   • previous artistic, academic, and career experience related to these goals; and
   • the importance of graduate study in the pursuit of your professional goals.
3. Writing sample (such as a research paper): 
   • Students applying for the 2-year M.A. Cohort with emphasis in education should submit a research paper about their pedagogy or educational philosophy in the classroom.
   • Students applying for the 2-year M.A. Cohort with an emphasis in education must submit a YouTube or Vimeo link to a class or series of classes taught by the applicant. Include the password if password protected.
4. Email addresses for three individuals familiar with your teaching, academic, and/or artistic work who can provide letters of recommendation to be requested through and submitted into the application.  
5. Participate in an interview, either in person or over the phone. Qualified applicants will be contacted by the Department of Dance recruitment coordinator to schedule an interview.

2. Demonstrate the ability to pursue advanced study and research in the field of dance and a commitment to contributing to the dance field through written publications.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in written and verbal communication skills.
4. Have experience in the field of dance, including teaching, performing, choreographing, and/or other related practice.

   • Complete the TWU PhD in Dance Questionnaire.
   • Statement of Purpose (3 pages) that outlines:
     • How your personal and professional goals align with our doctoral program and faculty.
     • Why you are applying to the TWU PhD in Dance program and what you want to do here.

     • The questions that you want to investigate in relation to what dance practices.
     • The new knowledge and skills that apply to your research interests that you are expecting to develop in our program.
     • Whether you see evidence that the necessary resources (coursework, faculty) are available at TWU.
     • How you see this program helping you reach your career goals.
     • Feel free to include any additional information that may aid us in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for doctoral study at TWU.
   • Curriculum vitae highlighting your experience in dance.
   • A scholarly writing sample (max. 20-25 pages) such as a journal article, thesis chapter, research paper, or conference paper. The writing sample is your opportunity to demonstrate your critical thinking and writing skills, and it should showcase the potential for the kind of research, analysis, and synthesis that is essential to a doctoral program.

6.  Email addresses for three academic or artistic professionals familiar with your academic preparation and potential for success in doctoral study who can provide letters of recommendation to be requested through and submitted into the application.

2. Minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on previous upper division and graduate work.
3. Statement of purpose.
4. Academic writing sample of 10-15 pages (double-spaced).
5. Email addresses for three academic or professional references familiar with your academic capabilities, who can provide letters of recommendation to be requested through and submitted into the application.
6. International students must score 600 on the TOEFL.

Graduate Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships are competitive as they provide stipends and out-of-state tuition waivers. For best consideration, students are encouraged to apply for assistantships at the same time they apply to the program. Additional information about types of work available and expectations can be obtained from the Graduate Program Coordinator. Assistantship applications must be emailed to the department chair at gwest@twu.edu. A personal interview may be required for graduate students who are seeking an assistantship.

Provisional status may include a leveling plan which includes undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses in the English department.
3. Minimum of a 3.0 GPA on previous upper-division and graduate work.
4. Score of 79 or higher on TOEFL (iBT) for international students.
5. Statement of purpose.

Admission Requirements

• Hold a baccalaureate degree in health promotion, public health, kinesiology, or a related field from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional or general accrediting agency, or an equivalent degree from a foreign college or university.
• Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher for the last 60 semester credit hours of bachelor's degree coursework, as evidenced by official transcripts. 
• For those seeking the M.S. in Kinesiology with Biomechanics emphasis, submission of GRE scores is highly recommended. 
• For international students, a test of English proficiency or exception. Please consult the School of Health Promotion and Kinesiology Graduate Advisor and the Office of International Education prior to applying.
• Collect and submit the following documents into the application:
  • Personal Statement Letter evidencing the ability to express concepts and ideas in writing, and should indicate whether the applicant is interested in conducting a thesis. Bachelor's in Music Therapy
Students with a bachelor's in music may be granted provisional admittance with the stipulation that a student completes all equivalency coursework and clinical experience that make them eligible for board certification by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Meet with the Music Therapy faculty.
Master’s Equivalency Applicants: Individuals interested in a career in music therapy will meet individually with one of the music therapy faculty. Interested students will engage in an interview and demonstrate music skills with a music therapy faculty member. Students will perform TWO songs, each from a different genre of music. At least one piece of music should be you accompanying yourself vocally with a chosen instrument. Both pieces of music should be non-classical. 

Master of Music Therapy Applicants: Individuals interested in pursuing the advanced degree of MMT will meet individually with one of the music therapy faculty.  During this interview, students will share two live and contrasting songs and discuss goals, context, and other relevant rationale surrounding songs.  Applicants should come prepared to discuss their career goals, insights about themselves, and music skills using piano/voice and guitar/voice. Music performed should be non-classical and highlight your clinical musicianship. 

Additionally, if the applicant wishes to be considered for performance-based scholarships:

Psychiatric Mental Health NP - Rolling admission

Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP requires one year experience in an acute care environment.

Psychiatric Mental Health NP requires experience in a behavioral health environment (one year full-time or two years part-time). Applicants are also required to submit a copy of their current CV/resume, two letters of recommendation from mental health practitioners/former faculty, and a one-page essay about their desire to be a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.  Applicants who do not possess experience in a behavioral health setting may be considered for provisional admission, in which case the required experience must be obtained before starting clinical practicum courses.

Applicants who do not meet these criteria but have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the last 60 semester credit hours of course work toward the undergraduate nursing degree may be considered for provisional admission on an individual basis. Factors that may be considered in the admission decision are: GPA on any prior graduate course work, scholarly activities, professional leadership, and work history.

For applicants who have a baccalaureate degree in nursing and a master's degree in another field (or more than one graduate degree), the grade point average from all previously earned degrees and post-graduate work can be considered in making the admission decision.

Individuals who have a master’s degree in nursing may seek admission to a post-master’s certification program in one of three areas: nurse practitioner, nursing health systems management, or nursing education. 

Applicants who wish to transfer from another nursing program must provide evidence of eligibility to continue in the previous nursing program. Admission Deadlines - Critical

This program begins once a year in the summer session. Applications are accepted the preceding year.

Your OTCAS application needs to be submitted by the October 1st 11 pm CST deadline. We will only be able to offer invitations to applications that are complete and verified.

• It is possible that the graduate school application and transcripts may need some additional processing time past the October 1st deadline, and the delay in the Graduate School application should not affect the invitation of an interview offer.
• The mandatory scheduled in-person interviews will be Friday, November 17th and Saturday, November 18th.  There will be virtual interviews on Monday, November 20th as a make-up option.  Emails will be sent to the selected candidates through your OTCAS email in the first several weeks of October.

Admission Requirements

• Baccalaureate degree completed before classes start in June; we accept all accredited undergraduate degrees.
• Minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 calculated on the approximate last 60 credit hours of your bachelor's degree, or minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on 12 or more graduate credit hours.
• GRE test scores are not required.
• Prerequisite courses GPA of 3.0 or higher and no grade below C. Advanced Placement credit will not be accepted. Applicants that have all of their prerequisites complete (with the possible exception of medical terminology) with official grades submitted by our October 1st deadline will have priority for the first round of admission offers. If an applicant is completing prerequisite course(s) after October 1st, we will accept the application for review and if all admission requirements are met, an interview invitation will be offered. We will not offer admission until an official grade report or un/official transcript for remaining prerequisite course(s) are submitted to the Office of Admissions Processing.
• For prerequisite equivalency approvals, email ot@twu.edu the course title, university attended, and course description.
• Prerequisite Courses:
• Elementary Statistics- Frequency distributions; graphical representation, measures of central tendency, and dispersion; normal curve; hypothesis testing confidence intervals. (TCCN MATH 1342)
• Anatomy and Physiology I & II Lecture / Lab- Principles of the structure and functions of the human body. (TCCN BIOL 2401 & BIOL 2402) You can take separate Anatomy and Physiology courses with labs but you cannot mix an A&P course and then the separate Anatomy or Physiology course
• Lifespan Developmental Psychology- Development of Personality and learning capacities across the life-span from birth to death; emphasis on interactions of heredity, environment, and maturational processes. (TCCN PSYC 2314)
• Abnormal Psychology- A study of psychopathology covering the major classification systems including mood disorders and psychotic behavior, defenses, anxiety, methods of psychotherapy, and mental health principles; examination of abnormality in relationship to normal behavior. (TCCN PSYC 2320)
• Competency in Medical Terminology demonstrated by a passing grade in a medical terminology course (college credit or continuing education certificate). This may be submitted after acceptance, prior to OTD program entry.  This course is not a part of your prerequisite GPA.
• Complete a minimum of 20 contact hours with one licensed occupational therapist, (not an occupational therapy assistant), within two years of application.  You will enter those hours into OTCAS, separate log is not necessary.
• A minimum of three evaluator/references.  One reference must be from the licensed occupational therapist that you observed for 20 hours. The other two evaluators should be academic and/or professional references.  Applicants should select evaluators that will show their breadth of experience from different sites or institutions.
• All students in the TWU OTD Program must comply with background checks, random drug screening, and immunization requirements in order to progress through experiential learning and fieldwork.

TWU Alumni Advantage Admission Requirements (for TWU students only)

Texas Woman’s University students or graduates who qualify may apply for an Alumni Advantage into the OTD program. In addition to the above requirements, the Alumni Advantage Admission requires:

• Texas Woman’s University baccalaureate degree be completed at the time of enrollment with a Pre-OT track degree plan in Child Development, Family Studies, Health Studies, Kinesiology Exercise Science, or Psychology.
• A minimum of 30 hours completed at Texas Woman’s University at the time of application.
• Overall GPA of 3.7 on the last 60 credit hours at the time of application.
• Prerequisite courses GPA of 3.5 or higher and no grade below B.
• One of the evaluator references must be from a full-time TWU faculty member in the Pre-OT major under whom the applicant has completed a course of study.

Application Process - Two part process

Part I: Apply to TWU

1.  Complete the application at TWU Online Graduate Application Portal. 

2. Pay the application fee.  The $50 fee, ($75 fee for International applicants), which applies to all new and returning applicants, can be paid by:

• Credit card - Online through the TWU Online Graduate Application.
• Certified check or money order by mail or electronically - payable to TWU, sent by mail to:
  TWU Admissions Processing, 301 Research Circle, Room 220; Denton, Texas 76204
  (include your full name and ID number).
• Cash (no personal checks) - Pay at the Bursar's Office. After paying, bring the receipt to Admissions Processing (2^nd floor of GRB).
• Fee Waivers - Graduate applicants who are certified McNair Scholars are eligible for a McNair Scholar application Fee waiver. Submit the request using the Application Fee Waiver Submission Form.

3.  You must submit your transcripts from all schools attended

• Domestic Applicants must submit official transcripts for each college or university attended, both undergraduate and graduate. See the Information on Transcripts website for more details.
• International Applicants are now required to provide an evaluation prepared by a NACES or AICE member evaluation service. International transcripts should not be sent directly to TWU.  See the International Admission website https://twu.edu/admissions/international-admissions/#how-to-apply for more details.

5.  Have official TOEFL scores sent to TWU using Code 6826 (if applicable).

Complete the OTCAS Application Process

1. Apply to The TWU School of Occupational Therapy through OTCAS. If you experience technical difficulty completing the OTCAS application, visit the OTCAS help page.
   
   • Use a permanent email address when applying to OTCAS and check it regularly.
   • Notify your evaluators/references to let them know they will receive a reference request from OTCAS. Applicants are encouraged to follow-up with evaluators to ensure the references are received prior to the deadline.
   • Make certain that the application becomes complete and verified by October 1st.
2.  When you have completed the two-part admission process, you should get an email from the School of OT saying that it has been sent to the admission committee for further consideration.
3. If you are an international student, please review the additional requirements. Submit TOEFL and TSE/Test A (if applicable).

Admission Deadlines

Applications are accepted at any time, but best consideration will be given to those received by April 15 prior to the desired Summer or Fall start date.  Admissions to our graduate programs are competitive.  Applicants must complete all steps in order to be considered for admission.

Admission Requirements

• Initial certification as an occupational therapist by National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).  Graduates from non-U.S. baccalaureate programs, recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists who otherwise meet admission requirements, need not be certified by the NBCOT to pursue the Ph.D. in Occupational Therapy.
• Graduate-level degree.
• 3.2 minimum GPA in graduate-level work
• Original score report from the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) taken within 10 years of application date. 
• Satisfactory English language proficiency score (if applicable).

Graduates from non-U.S. baccalaureate programs, recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists who otherwise meet admission requirements, need not be certified by the NBCOT to pursue the Ph.D. in Occupational Therapy.

• The Ph.D. in Occupational Therapy at TWU is based on a mentorship model. Applicants must first match research interests and speak directly with a potential faculty mentor from the Ph.D. faculty in occupational therapy before applying to the program. Please contact Patricia Bowyer at pbowyer@twu.edu to begin the faculty mentor match. After a faculty mentor has been identified and approved, complete the following steps:
• Take the GRE General Test and submit your GRE scores to TWU (Code 6826). 
• Complete the School of OT PhD Application and Essay (PDF) and upload into application under Letter of Intent.
• Current resume.
• Email addresses for three academic or professional individuals familiar with your academic capabilities, who can provide letters of recommendation to be requested through and submitted into the application. 
• Verification of certification as an Occupational Therapist (via NBCOT or WFOT)
• Participate in an admissions committee interview.
• Complete a Faculty Mentor Agreement.

Application Deadlines

October 15 @ 11 CST  (9 months before the program begins). The Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) application opens July 1st (one year in advance).  All materials must be received by TWU and PTCAS.  The DPT program only begins in the Fall semester.

The application review cycle begins in July.  Students will receive an email of acceptance or alternate notice no earlier than mid-December.

Admission Requirements

Applicants may be in the process of completing prerequisites and bachelor’s degree when applying. If accepted, the student must have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree and all outstanding prerequisites in order to enroll.

• Baccalaureate degree in any major.
• Required Prerequisites completed with a grade of C or higher before the program begins (recommended that no more than three are outstanding at the time of application).
• Prerequisite Math & Science GPA above 3.0 using the latest grades in: Chemistry I & II with labs, Physics I & II with labs, Anatomy & Physiology I & II with labs, and Algebra (or higher, statistics not accepted).
• Overall GPA above 3.0 (includes original and retake grades of all college courses) as calculated in PTCAS.
• Last 60 semester credit hours above 3.0 as calculated in PTCAS. This will include all post-bachelors or masters credits before the bachelor’s degree. Calculation ends where 59-60 credits fall and includes whole semesters (range can be 59-73 hours).
• General Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Must be completed within the last 5 years.  Super scoring is utilized - the highest score in each area of all exams. 
• A minimum of 80 hours observing two physical therapists from differently owned facilities (40 hours with each PT). Applicants must have both inpatient (Minimum 20 hours) and outpatient experiences. Documentation is through PTCAS.
• Current BLS certifications in CPR and AED from the American Heart Association completed before entering the program.
• Immunizations received before entering the program as required by the state of Texas, including 3-Hepatitis B, Tdap (within 9 years), 2-MMR, 2-varicella or titer, TB test (expires after 12 months), and Hepatitis C testing. In addition, a flu shot is required in the fall of every year while in the program .
• Testing for drugs and a criminal background check.
• International students or if your bachelor’s degree is from a country where the official language is other than English, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Spoken English tests and achieve scores of at least 24-writing, 26-speaking, 21-reading comprehension, and 18-listening comprehension - Total 89. For a list of exempt countries and the TOEFL exemption form visit the TWU International Student Admission website.

Two Part Application Process

4. Take the GRE General Test and submit your GRE scores using PTCAS Code 1673 (this will submit to PTCAS and TWU). Take the exam before September 24 for scores to arrive by the October 15 deadline. 

5.  Have official TOEFL scores sent to TWU using Code 6826 (if applicable).

Part II: Complete the PTCAS Application Process

1. Complete the online Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) application (opens July 1^st - a year in advance)
2. Include Additional Supplemental materials as outlined on PTCAS application:
   • Interest letter for TWU
   • Resume
   • Documentation of Observation Hours
   • Three letters of recommendation (From two PT’s and one professor or employer)
   • Campus preference: Dallas or Houston
   • TWU Colleague ID#
3. Send transcripts to PTCAS too.

Admission Requirements

• Proof of graduation from an approved Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited program or equivalent entry-level physical therapy program.
  A license to practice physical therapy in the United States or a minimum of 24 months of full-time clinical practice (beyond that required for entry-level education) within the last 3 years preferred.
• A master's degree or clinical doctorate (DPT) is required from accredited programs; however, the masters can be in a related area (not necessarily physical therapy). Degrees must be completed before beginning the Ph.D.
• A basic course in statistics within the last 10 years.
• A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• All coursework from a foreign university must be evaluated by TWU’s International Education evaluator to establish U.S. equivalencies.
• International students or if your bachelor’s degree is from a country where the official language is other than English, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Spoken English tests and achieve scores of at least 24-writing, 26-speaking, 21-reading comprehension, and 18-listening comprehension - Total 89.   • Copy of PT license.
  • A written statement indicating the current focus of professional and research interests including an evaluation of personal strengths and weaknesses.
  • Resume/curriculum vitae.
• Email addresses for two individuals (preferably from the latest employer and/or faculty from the last school attended) familiar with your academic capabilities, who can provide letters of recommendation to be requested through and submitted into the application.
• An interview is required. An interview by telephone or with technology may be arranged if circumstances preclude an on-site interview.

Opportunities for clinical research while at TWU are limited for students not licensed in Texas. However, research can be completed in another state or country. In addition, we can advise graduate students about seeking licensure in Texas.

The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredits entry-level Physical Therapy (DPT and PTA) programs only.  CAPTE does not accredit post-professional programs.

Application Requirements

Admission Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree, preferably in psychology or a related field; however, it is not a requirement that the degree be in psychology.  Applicants with advanced degrees (e.g. a master’s in psychology or a related field, or with a specialist degree in school psychology) will also be considered. However, an advanced degree is not required for application to the school psychology doctoral program.
• At least 18 semester hours of undergraduate coursework in psychology, including:
  • Introduction to Psychology/General Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology/Lifespan
  • Statistics
  • Experimental Psychology/Research Design/Research Methods
  • Cognitive Psychology/Psychology of Learning
  • Physiological Psychology/Behavior Neuroscience
  • Applicants without the required undergraduate coursework, if accepted into the program, would be required to complete the coursework prior to beginning their graduate work.
• A 3.0 overall GPA average for the last 60 semester credit hours of undergraduate work and/or a graduate GPA of 3.5.
• Collect and submit the following documents into the TWU Application.

• GPA of 3.5 or higher on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work and on all graduate work (a GPA of at least 3.0 may be considered for conditional admission).
• A writing sample (e.g., a thesis chapter, a term paper, a conference paper, or the like).
• Submit a personal statement of interest (2-3 pages).

Note: Students admitted with a bachelor’s degree can earn their M.A. degree during the course of study. They will be required to write a master’s thesis, which, together with their coursework, will be evaluated by the sociology faculty at the end of their master’s stage. Based on the evaluation, the faculty could recommend that a student continue to pursue the Ph.D. degree or be awarded a terminal M.A degree. The thesis requirement is waived for students admitted with a master’s degree.

  • Verification of minimum scaled scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT). To have scores submitted directly to TEA use the agency code 8225. Minimum scores: Speaking-24, Listening-22, Reading-22, Writing-21.
  • Background checks will be required for early field experiences, student teaching experiences, and for certification in the state of Texas. Teacher candidates pay all fees incurred. Applicants who have been convicted of a felony must identify themselves on the criminal background application form. Applicants who fail to disclose a personal felony conviction will be removed from the educator preparation program. If you have ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor and would like to check your eligibility for teaching, you can go to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website. On this page, you will find a Preliminary Criminal History Review for Educator Certification Candidates for a non-refundable fee. This service will allow those individuals who are contemplating obtaining a Texas Teacher Certificate in the future, the opportunity to have a review of an existing criminal history performed by agency staff.

Failure to provide any documentation upon request by an agency, program, or school may result in the candidate’s inability to complete field experiences and the requirements for the TWU Educator Preparation Program Education.
