Temporary Conditions & Accommodations

Disability Services recognizes that individuals with temporary conditions that are a result of injuries, surgery or short-term disabilities may need access to resources and accommodations. Examples of temporary conditions may include, but are not limited to: broken limbs, hand injuries or short term disabilities following surgery or medical treatments.

Pregnancy and parenting accommodations are provided by the Office of Student Life. More information can be found on the Student Life Parenting Students website.

Application Process

The application process for temporary conditions is the same procedure as the one followed by students with permanent disabilities. Students must apply for accommodations, provide documentation and meet with a DSS staff member to discuss accommodations. We will notify your faculty of your accommodations after they are approved by DSS staff.

Accommodations through DSS are not retroactive. If you have questions or concerns about classes you have already missed, contact the Office of Student Life. DSS will inform you if this step is necessary.

Documentation Requirements

To receive accommodations for a temporary condition, the student should provide documentation that includes a summary indicating the type of disability, impact, and estimated duration of the disability. It is also helpful to know any side effects caused by medication and recommendations for accommodations. The information should be recent enough to identify current impact. Disability Services staff will advise the student if any additional information is needed prior to setting up accommodations, as well as share information on potential resources.

Potential Accommodations for Temporary Disabilities

Academic accommodations are identified through an interactive process. Each student is assessed individually and every endeavor is made to work with instructors to find workable answers appropriate to the particular course. Examples of accommodations which may be available for a temporary injury may include:

  • Scribe for exams
  • Note Taking assistance
  • Audio recorder for lectures
  • Extended testing time
  • Computer for essay exams
  • Classroom and testing accommodations
  • Accessible routes and elevator access on campus
  • Extended travel time across campus between classes

Note: Disability Services does not provide any kind of transportation to or from classes.

Refer to the Parking website for information on how to obtain a temporary parking pass for campus. You will need a state issued parking permit for accessible parking to use any TWU disabled parking spots along with a parking pass from Parking.
