If you're a student in the School of Education at TWU, you have a FREE new opportunity to prepare for work in urban education with an Urban Education Micro-Credential. Learn to navigate complexities of urban education, explore historical and cultural legacies of urban populations, and foster an educational environment that honors and respects urban communities. Our micro-credential is designed to equip educators, community leaders and stakeholders with skills they need.

Designed to address the current teacher shortage, particularly in public school districts serving marginalized communities, the Urban Education Micro-Credential will guide participants toward a deeper understanding of urban education dynamics and equip them with tools to create more equitable and responsive educational environments.

Requirements

Participation

Complete in two semesters (Summer and Fall). The micro-credential cohort begins every summer.

Timeline to complete

Summer:

  • Attend one hour online seminar
  • Complete autoethnography
  • Complete critical media literacy presentation
  • Attend half-day face-to-face workshop

Fall:

  • Attend second one-hour online seminar
  • Complete experiential learning (minimum of five hours in an urban school setting)
  • Attend last one-hour online seminar 
  • Complete Praxis Project 

Total Expected Time Commitment:

  • 3 Hours - Three online seminars (one hour each)
  • 6 Hours - One face-to-face workshop
  • 5 Hours minimum - Experiential Learning (minimum of five hours of engagement in an urban school setting)
  • 3 Hours - Activities
  • 17 Hours Total

Eligibility Criteria for TWU Students

The following is required to pursue the Urban Education Micro-Credential.

Undergraduate Students seeking Teacher Certification:

  • Letter of support from one course instructor
  • Completed EDUC 2003 with C or better or will complete it by start of micro-credential in June (students seeking teacher certification verified through TWU Self Service).
  • Enrolled in a program that leads to teacher certification

Undergraduate Students outside of the Educator Preparation Program:

  • Letter of support from one course instructor
  • GPA of 2.25 or better (verified through TWU Self Service)
  • Written justification as to why a micro-credential in urban education is of interest to you and how it will benefit your future profession

Graduate Students:

  • Letter of support from faculty advisor or course instructor
  • Completed 12 hours of graduate coursework (verified through TWU Self Service)
  • Enrolled in a graduate program within the College of Professional Education
    • OTHER PROGRAMS ARE ACCEPTED: If you are in another program outside of COPE, we ask that you provide justification for why a micro-credential in urban education is of interest to you and serves you in your profession

Registration in the Urban Education Micro-Credential is completely optional and not a required part of an academic program.
