What is Food Science?

Food science is the scientific study of raw food materials and their physical, chemical, and biological changes during formulation, processing, packaging, storage and evaluation as consumer products.

Why Food Science at TWU?

TWU is home to the only BS in food science degree in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex

Texas Woman’s offers the only BS in Food Science degree in North Texas. With the state of Texas being the second largest employer of food scientists in the United States, TWU will help meet the need for food scientists.

Expert faculty with contacts to local industry leaders

Many of TWU’s nutrition and food sciences faculty have industry experience and invite professional contacts to visit their classrooms. These experiences provide students with valuable networking opportunities and a closer look at how the food industry operates.

  • Our flavor chemistry program has industry connections and will often work with BS students who take associate professor Xiaofen Du’s classes.
  • Adjunct professor Bruce Perkin is an independent consultant in the food industry with over four decades of hands-on experience, providing practical and strategic advice to the food industry.
