What is the difference between an Academic Coach, an Academic Advisor and a Tutor?

Academic coaches

Academic coaches are trained students and/or professionals who focus on developing success skills and strategies that allow you to be successful in the classroom, the workplace, and life in general. Typical topics covered with a coach include time management, motivation, transitioning from high school to college (or from college to career/graduate school), note-taking, or test preparation. We recommend you work with your coach, academic advisor(s), and tutor(s) all at the same time.

Academic advisors

Academic advisors are trained professionals who focus on helping you determine the best educational plan according to your interests, capabilities, and personal circumstances. Some topics advisors can provide information about include selecting specific classes for the semester and planning out classes towards graduation. Advising is one of the first steps that you take toward achieving your academic goals!

Tutors

Tutors typically help you in one-on-one meetings with the content of a particular subject. They aim to help you increase your comprehension of class materials and boost your academic confidence and performance. At TWU, students may find a tutor by visiting any of the following spaces:

What is a typical coaching session like?

Each session typically lasts 45-60 minutes and is generally tailored to the student's needs and experiences. Our coaches work with you to create a space where active reflection and exploration of new skills and strategies thrive. We recognize that you know you best and that you bring a wealth of knowledge to the table. Using inquiry and strengths-based frameworks, we ask questions that encourage deep reflection and suggest strategies you can use to reach your goals. However, common topics include time management, organization, note-taking, test preparation and general study strategies.

How do I prepare for a coaching session?

First session (Intake)

If it’s your first session, we suggest you come in with your completed intake form, questions you may have for your coach, and talking points for topics you want to address. Your intake session is there to help your coach get to know you better and learn how best to help you. However, if your issue is pressing or requires immediate attention, let your coach know! We’re happy to help you.

Recurring session(s)

Between sessions, we strongly encourage you to review and use the strategies developed in the previous session. Bring in notes of what worked, what didn’t work, and any questions you still have. Additionally, feel free to present new or pressing issues.

How many coaching sessions can I attend per semester?

There is no minimum number of meetings students can have per semester.

Meeting time and frequency may change. You may discuss attendance further with your coach.

Will I see the same Academic Coach each time?

We recognize the importance of finding a coach that you feel comfortable working with and regularly meeting with them. So, we strongly encourage that you schedule academic coaching session(s) early in the semester. We fill up quickly!

We may not always be able to pair you with your coach of choice. We appreciate your flexibility!

How much is Academic Coaching?

Academic coaching is free for all TWU students.
