SI Student FAQ

What is SI?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a non-remedial approach to learning that integrates “what to learn” with “how to learn”. By integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn,” SI provides a structured support system for students to deepen their understanding of course material and improve their academic performance.

SI sessions are facilitated by a trained peer leader who has already mastered the course material. These facilitators attend course lectures alongside students, then lead collaborative group study sessions outside of class where students can engage with the material and with one another. During these sessions, students review key concepts, discuss important topics, develop effective study strategies, and prepare for exams.

What is an SI Leader?

SI Leaders are upper-class undergraduate students who have previously taken and passed the course with a B grade or better. They are trained to plan and run three weekly group study sessions that help students with understanding course content and developing effective study strategies.

If you are interested in becoming an SI Leader, visit our Become an SI Leader page.

How much does it cost to attend a session?

SI sessions are completely free for all enrolled students in SI-supported courses. The program is a part of your institution’s academic support services, covered by your tuition and fees.

When do SI sessions start?

SI sessions begin no later than the second week of classes. SI Leaders will hold 3 sessions per week depending on their availability.

We do not offer SI sessions during finals week or during spring/fall breaks.

What happens during a typical session?

When you arrive at an SI session, you’ll sign in. Then your SI Leader will then guide you through 3-4 engaging activities focused on key topics from the lecture. These activities are thoughtfully planned based on the leader’s experience and instructor feedback.

The goal is to provide focused practice on challenging concepts rather than a comprehensive review of lecture content. Your SI Leader will keep the group focused and ensure you stay on track to complete all practice materials. Come prepared to actively engage and tackle those tricky topics together!

What is expected of me at a session?

At an SI session, you should:

  • Sign-in for the session (this information is not shared with faculty)
  • Arrive prepared with your notes, course materials, and questions
  • Actively participate in discussions and activities (See our SI Participation Guidelines)
  • Collaborate with your peers
  • Be respectful of others’ ideas and contributions
  • Apply the strategies and knowledge gained to your coursework

Is SI the same as Tutoring?

While both Supplemental Instruction (SI) and tutoring aim to enhance your understanding of course material, they take different approaches. Take a look at the table (below) to see how:

Approach Supplmental Instruction Tutoring
Definition A non-remedial, peer-led, group-focused academic support service designed to enhance student performance in high-risk courses by facilitating deeper understanding of content and developing transferable study skills in a collaborative learning environment. A peer-led or professional academic support service providing individualized or small group assistance with subject-specific learning and review focused on students’ immediate needs.
Leader SI Leaders are students who have excelled in the course (B or better) and attend classes alongside current students. They receive specialized training in facilitation techniques and learning strategies from the Pioneer Center for Student Excellence, adhering to standards set by the International Center for Supplemental Instruction. Tutors can be students or professional staff with demonstrated subject expertise. They may receive additional departmental training but are not typically associated with specific faculty members.
How it works?

SI Leaders conduct three 50-minute group study sessions weekly outside of class. They plan interactive activities to review course material, teach study skills, and promote collaborative learning. SI Leaders do not re-lecture, grade work, or introduce new material.

Students can access tutoring through walk-in services or scheduled appointments. Tutors help clarify specific concepts, answer questions, and assist with problem-solving in brief, focused sessions.

Does my SI Leader give me a grade?

No, SI Leaders do not control or give students’ grades. They also do not discuss grades with participants. For specific concerns about your performance or grades, it’s best to speak directly with your course instructor during office hours or by appointment.

Will my professor be there?

No, your professor does not attend SI sessions. These sessions are led by trained SI Leaders who have previously excelled in the course. This peer-led environment encourages open discussion and collaborative learning among students.

What if my course is not supported by SI?

If your course doesn’t offer SI this semester, we encourage you to:

Visit our campus partners! Check out other campus resources that can support your academic needs:

Talk with your instructor! Share with your instructor that you feel SI would be beneficial to your learning experience in their course. Encourage your faculty member to contact the SI Program Coordinator to discuss support options.

Contact a member of our SI staff! Send an email to Dr. Elia Tamplin at etamplin@twu.edu. Make sure it includes information about the course you are requesting and a brief explanation of why you feel SI support would be beneficial for that course.
