Admission

Students must meet the following criteria to be considered for the DI/Master’s program. All programs at TWU are open to qualified men and women.

  1. Verification Statement of Completion (VSC) showing completion of ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics/Dietetics Program (DPD) curriculum. The VSC must be earned before the MS/DI begins and the program completion date must be within the past five years. If a VS is more than five years old, the student will need to retake a current MNT course, Advanced Nutrition course and earn a grade of “C” or higher in each course. If the Verification Statement is more than 10 years old, current DPD requirements must be met.
  2. Grade Point Average of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale on the last 60 undergraduate hours (unconditional admission).
  3. Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better on required science courses and upper-level nutrition and foodservice management courses.
  4. A one to two-page resume providing evidence of work and volunteer experience related to the intended field of study.
  5. Admission to the TWU Graduate School. Note: MS/DI selections are made prior to and separately from the Graduate School Admission process. If a student is appointed into the MS/DI program but is denied admission into the Graduate School, the MS/DI appointment would be forfeited at that time. Please refer to the online TWU Graduate catalog for admission requirements. (www.twu.edu/gradschool).

Application

  1. Application to TWU MS/DI Denton Program:
    • The program participates in Dietetics Inclusive Centralized Application Service. DICAS will be available in early October for the Spring 2023 match. The online application must be submitted by 11:59pm Central Time on February 15, 2023. The fee to use the DICAS is $50 for the first application submitted and $25 for each additional application (View website). Email: DICASinfo@DICAS.org
    • When completing the application form, applicants must include the name and contact information (specifically an email address) for each reference. This will trigger an email message requesting completion of a reference form. The form will be completed online. Students submitting more than one application can use the same individuals as references for each
    • Applicants who apply to internships using DICAS will be asked to complete a Personal Statement (500-word limit). Include:
      1. Why do you want to become a dietitian? What put you in this path? What areas of specialty or practice appeal to you (if you know).
      2. Describe how your experiences have prepared you for your future career (lifetime, volunteer, school, or paid).
      3. Describe your two greatest professional strengths that will help you in your future career.
      4. Describe at one least area of professional growth that you are still working on to be your best self.
    • Official transcripts for ALL colleges and universities attended should be sent to DICAS – Transcript Department, PO Box 9118, Watertown, MA 02472.
    • Applicants must also register online for computer matching through D&D Digital Systems (dnddigital.com) and select Internship Program priority choices by 11:59pm Central Time on February 15, 2023. There is a one-time $65 computer matching fee.
    • Required Supplemental Information for the TWU MS/DI Program in Denton, Texas. Upload to the DICAS Supplemental section. Additional information asked on the application include:
      • Listing the languages you know in order of dominance (other than English), rating your fluency,; listing any health-related certifications you have; education history of parents or legal guardians (first generation college student status). 
      • Open-ended questions include the following:
        • We would love to get to know you better. Please describe two things that bring you joy and one that makes you anxious/nervous.
        • Communication can be challenging in dietetics. Please describe a specific situation in which you felt communication was challenging. Describe the barriers to communication and steps you took to overcome those barriers or lessons you learned that you think you would use NEXT time to improve communication.
  2. Application to TWU’s Graduate School: Applicants may apply to the TWU Graduate School immediately after successful acceptance to the TWU MS/DI program – Denton in April or at any time if early acceptance is preferred. Application to the TWU Graduate School must include:
    • Online Graduate School Application from www.GoApplyTexas.com
    • A $50 non-refundable application fee, payable to TWU Graduate Admissions.
    • Official college transcripts from ALL colleges/universities attended. Send transcripts to:

Applications to the Dietetic Internship and the Graduate School are two separate processes. The program offers 16 positions during the Spring match (for Fall start) and receives an average of 50 applications each year.

Internship Selection Process

A Selection Committee comprised of NFS faculty and program preceptors reviews all qualified applications. Application materials are evaluated by objective criteria in the areas of GPA, professional interests, goals, work experience and letters of recommendation.  Work experience is highly recommended.
