Data Science & Informatics: the Science of Data
Data Science & Informatics, or the science of information, is a rapidly evolving field of study that applies the insights gained from technology to the problems we face in our everyday lives. By collecting and closely analyzing data, informaticists are able to discover meaning within complex networks and then use that knowledge to either improve upon existing technologies and practices, or create entirely new computer-based systems.
The study of data science is diverse and interdisciplinary by nature, and the potential career paths available to those with a degree in Data Science & Informatics are only as limited as one's imagination. Today’s data scientists and analysts are already transforming our society across a remarkably broad range of disciplines:
- in technology: designing responsive and user-friendly websites, apps, and games.
- in healthcare: developing algorithms to assess the need for pediatric intensive care unit transfers for hospitalized children.
- in environmental science: measuring levels of toxic elements in community water sources and tracking the effect of greenhouse gas emissions on the ozone.
- in marketing: predicting consumer interest to help clients sell products and services customized to meet consumer demand.
