Technology and Tools
Online courses rely on technology to access course materials, communicate with instructors, and complete assignments. Preparing your technology in advance can help you avoid disruptions and stay on track throughout the semester.
Technology Requirements
Technology needs may vary depending on your course, but most students should have access to:
- A computer or laptop capable of running web-based applications
- A reliable internet connection
- A supported web browser
- Software for creating and viewing documents (e.g., word processing, presentations, PDFs)
- A webcam and microphone for courses that include video participation
Some courses may require additional software or specialized tools. Always review your course syllabus for specific requirements.
Tip: Microsoft Office 365 is available free to TWU students and can be installed on multiple devices.
Supported Browsers
Using a supported and up-to-date browser helps ensure that course tools, assignments, and quizzes function correctly.
Recommended browsers include:
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
- Safari (Mac users)
- Microsoft Edge
Students should:
- Keep their browser updated to the latest version
- Enable cookies and pop-ups for Canvas
- Avoid using outdated or unsupported browsers
Using an unsupported browser may result in problems when submitting assignments or completing quizzes.
Zoom and Course Tools
Some courses use additional tools to support learning, including Zoom for virtual meetings and other course-related technologies.
Zoom may be used for:
- Live class sessions
- Virtual office hours
- Group meetings
- Presentations or demonstrations
Instructors may also use other tools integrated within Canvas, such as publisher platforms or interactive learning tools.
Students should:
- Check their syllabus for required tools
- Test access to Zoom or other tools early in the semester
- Follow instructor instructions for using course technologies
For information about responsible use of digital tools and privacy considerations, see Privacy and Responsibilities.
Using Mobile Devices
Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets can be useful for:
- Checking announcements
- Viewing course materials
- Participating in discussions
- Receiving notifications
However, mobile devices are not recommended for all course activities.
Students should use a computer when:
- Submitting assignments
- Uploading files
- Taking quizzes or exams
- Accessing complex course tools
The Canvas Student App can be helpful for staying connected, but a computer provides the most reliable experience for completing coursework.
Tips for Quizzes and Exams
Online quizzes and exams often have time limits and specific instructions. Preparing your technology in advance can help prevent problems.
Before starting a quiz or exam:
- Use a reliable internet connection
- Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications
- Read all instructions carefully
- Ensure your browser is up to date
During the quiz:
- Do not refresh your browser unless instructed
- Save answers if the option is available
- Keep track of the time remaining
Submitting your work before the time limit expires is your responsibility.
What to Do if Technology Fails
Technology issues can happen but knowing what to do can help minimize their impact.
If you experience a technical problem:
- Document the issue (what happened and when it occurred)
- Contact your instructor immediately
For additional assistance, including login or device-related issues, see Support and Resources.
Plan Ahead for Success
To reduce the risk of technology issues:
- Test your technology at the beginning of the semester
- Avoid waiting until the last minute to submit assignments
- Have a backup plan for accessing another computer or internet connection if needed
Being prepared helps ensure that technology supports your learning rather than interrupts it.
