TWU Student Veterans to host virtual 5K

Nov. 3, 2020 — DENTON — TWU students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members are invited to take part in the first “Walk a Mile in their Shoes,” a virtual 5K that will take place during the week of November 9.

Participants will pay $10 per category to participate in a walk, run or roll (wheelchair). Registration and payment must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November. 11.

All walks, runs, and rolls must be tracked using either a fitness watch (Fitbit, Apple Watch, etc.) or app (Runkeeper, Nike Run, etc.). Participants will email a photo or screenshot of the fitness app or watch to TWU Student Veterans Association. The photo or screenshot must display the date, distance and duration of activity.

Three prizes (TWU fleece jacket and two swag bags) for each category will be awarded through a random selection process. Neither duration or speed will be a factor, but participants will need to log at least 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).

Proceeds will be used for the Student Veteran Association’s end of semester barbecue celebration as well as coffee, snacks and supplies for the veteran lounge, located in the Student Union at Hubbard Hall.

“In addition to the need to raise funds, the student veterans have been concerned about the negative impact of social isolation on their fellow veterans,” said Amy O’Keefe, executive director of CARE and SVA advisor. “By hosting this event, the idea is to engage both veterans and their supporters to build some common experience to get people connected.”

Texas Woman’s serves almost 800 veterans as students, dependents and employees. Connection is the primary focus of the TWU Student Veteran Association program. For additional questions about the “Walk a Mile in their Shoes” event, contact the CARE office.
