SLIS faculty to present this Fall
Seven faculty members from the School of Library and Information Studies are set to present at conferences in upcoming months.
First, October 14-17, Priya Kizhakkethil, PhD, Amy Lanier, Carol Perryman, PhD (Faculty Emerita), Slava Zavalin, PhD, and Tara Zimmerman, PhD, will present at the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) Conference in Portland, Oregon:
- Kizhakkethil and Perryman will present a works in progress poster: “Are we ready? Generative AI and the LIS curriculum.”
- Lanier will present a poster: “Proceed with Caution! Trigger Warnings in Online Book-related Information Grounds,” and was also selected for the ALISE Emerging Scholars Program.
- Zavalin will present at a special interest group session: “Truth & Information? Preparing Information Organization & Retrieval Students for an AI Future.” He is also slated to present a juried paper: “Skill-Building in Subject Representation: Assessing Learning Outcomes through Analysis of Student-Created Metadata.”
- Zimmerman will also present a juried paper: “Examining the Role of School Librarians in Teaching Young Children to Detect and Avoid Misinformation.”
Next, October 25-29, Kizhakkethil, Perryman, and Zimmerman will present at the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) Conference in Calgary, Canada. Kizhakkethil and Zimmerman will make their way their thanks to travel assistance grants from the TWU Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
- Kizhakkethil and Perryman will present a short paper: “Student Perceptions of Generative AI in LIS Coursework.”
- Zimmerman will present two posters: “Call for Research: Leveraging Social Networking for Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness” and “Determining Trust in Information: Initial Literature Review.” She will also present a juried Paper: “Crime Junkies: A Case for Studying Information Behavior Surrounding True Crime Podcasts.”
Hyuk-Jin Lee, Meti Tmava, and Zavalin will present at additional international conferences. Tmava and Zavalin will benefit from travel assistance grants from the TWU Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
- Lee will present a poster at the International Conference on Cultural Heritage and Tourism (ICCHT), October 24-25, in Houston, Texas — “Proposal for a Monster Village in Namsan Mountain, Seoul: Significance from a Phenomenological Perspective.”
- Tmava will present a paper at the 19th International Conference on Knowledge Management (ICKM), October 21-22, in Kent, Ohio — "Information Literacy in the Digital Age: What Is Being Taught in LIS Programs?”
- Zavalin will present a paper at the 22nd International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications (DCMI), October 20-23, in Toronto, Canada — “Exploring Accuracy, Completeness, and Consistency of Student-Created VRA Core 4.0 Paintings Metadata.”
