Aug. 19, 2024 — DENTON — Texas rural libraries are in line for a boost thanks to a Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) tuition grant in the amount of $75,000 awarded to School of Library and Information Studies Director Gretchen Hoffman, PhD.

The grant will support 25 new students from rural areas pursuing a Master of Library Science degree at Texas Woman’s University, providing nearly half of tuition and fees in the first two semesters of the program.

Currently, nearly 40% of students in the School of Library and Information Studies are from Texas communities with less than 100,000 people. Scholarships provided by this grant will help rural students start their master’s with the goal of ultimately serving libraries in their own rural communities.

“I am excited and very thankful,” Hoffman said. “I hope this scholarship will encourage and support students on their educational journey to serve as public librarians in Texas.”
