TWU Theatre presents ‘These Shining Lives’

 

Jan. 30, 2020– DENTON– The Texas Woman’s University Theatre Program opens its spring 2020 season with “These Shining Lives,” the story of one woman’s courageous fight for justice and workplace rights.

Performance times are:

• 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12
• 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 13
• 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14
• 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15
• 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15
• 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 16

All performances will take place in the Redbud Theater Complex, located on the north side of Hubbard Hall on TWU’s Denton campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Saturday afternoon’s performance will have a cash-only, pay-what-you-can option available at the box office. “These Shining Lives” is based on the real life stories of the “Radium Girls,” women who worked for the Radium Dial Company painting instrument dials with luminescent paint derived from the radioactive element radium. When the women fall ill from radiation poisoning they are dismissed and mistreated by the company and thus are forced to fight for their health and workplace rights. The subsequent trial resulted in a landmark decision that would reshape the rights and lives of American workers.

The TWU Theatre Program is excited to welcome guest directors Susan Carol Davis and Sharon Barnhill. Davis serves as the president of the Artists Enclave of Denton County and is the recipient of the 2019 Community Arts Recognition Award. She also directed the award-winning film “Mack Minded.” Barnhill is a local stage, television, and film actress and writer.

The cast of “These Shining Lives” features TWU Theatre undergraduates Hannah Fuller, Lauren Jordan, Hope Warner, Janel Agbor, Damon Wadyko, William Clark, Alexander Delacruz-Nunez, Felix Ferris and Bryce Neel.

The production will feature guest lighting designer Nikki Deshae, undergraduates Abel Mathew and Kellsie Flanagan as sound co-designers, associate professor Rhonda Gorman as set and costume designer, and undergraduate student Markia Graves as properties artisan.
