About the TExES Exams

To get certified to teach in Texas, you must pass the TExES exams required for your degree plan — usually two, but sometimes more. TWU's coursework is built to prepare you for these exams, so staying on top of your classes is the best exam prep there is.

The exams you'll take:

• PPR EC-12 (160): Required for everyone. Tests your knowledge of effective teaching practices. Exception: If you are a resident in the Pioneer Teacher Residency or PREP GYO program, PPR is not required.
• Content Exam: Matches your certification area (e.g., EC-6 Core Subjects, 7-12 Math, 4-8 Social Studies). Your content courses prepare you for this.
• Supplemental Exam(s): Only if your degree plan requires it. Example: EC-6 Core Subjects + Special Education certification also requires the Special Education Supplemental (163). ESL (154) is another common one.

You need TWU EPP approval first, you can't just sign up. We track your readiness through coursework, benchmarks, and practice exams, then clear you once you're ready.
