What is the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) at TWU?

• The EPP at Texas Woman's University is the formal program that guides, trains and prepares students to earn their Texas educator certification. Administered by the Office of Educator Preparation Services (OEPS) in Stoddard Hall, the EPP supports both undergraduate and graduate students on their journey to becoming licensed teachers or advanced school professionals.

Can I get certified if I already have a bachelor's degree?

• Yes. TWU offers pathways for initial teacher certification for undergraduate students completing their degree, as well as post-baccalaureate and graduate pathways for those who already hold a degree and want to transition into teaching. When and how do I apply to the EPP?

• Applying to the EPP is a separate step from applying to TWU itself. Once you meet the baseline course hours and GPA requirements, you will apply online. You can find the direct application link on our main page under Apply to the EPP.

What is SL&L and why do I need it?

• Student Learning & Licensure (SL&L) is the online assessment and data system used by TWU. You will use this platform to submit your EPP application, follow your degree progress, track field experience hours and submit your student teaching/residency application.

Who should I talk to about mapping out my classes?

What is the difference between field experiences and clinical student teaching?

• Field Experiences (Pre-Clinical): Early classroom observations and interactive hours built into your coursework before you begin full-time student teaching.
• Clinical Student Teaching / Residency: Your final semester(s) immersive capstone experience. You will be placed in a local school district to teach full-time under the guidance of a veteran cooperating teacher and a TWU field supervisor.

Can I do an internship instead of student teaching?

• Yes, under specific pathways (such as post-baccalaureate or graduate initial certification programs) students who secure a full-time, paid teaching position as a teacher of record on an Intern or Probationary Certificate can complete a year-long paid internship to satisfy their clinical requirement.

What exams do I need to take to become a certified teacher in Texas?

• To earn your initial certificate, you must pass the appropriate Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) exams. This typically includes a Content Pedagogy exam specific to your grade level/subject and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) exam or the edTPA assessment, depending on your track.

How do I prepare for my certification exams?

• Our dedicated team is here to support educator candidates in passing their state exams. We provide a variety of test preparation resources, including practice exams and faculty-led workshops to build your confidence and strengthen content knowledge before you take the official state test. To get started, you will complete practice certification exams. It is essential to take a current practice exam, which is defined as one completed in the current semester or the immediately preceding semester, to qualify for registration for the TExES exams. Additionally, you will need to obtain a code from the OEPS Testing Coordinator for the registration process.

Who actually issues my teaching certificate?

• The Texas Education Agency (TEA) issues your official certificate. However, you cannot apply for it until the TWU OEPS formally reviews your file, confirms you have met all degree, fieldwork, and testing requirements, and recommends you to the state.
