Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a national holiday celebrating the birthday and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. held on the third Monday of January. In Dr. King's memory, MLK Day of Service commemorates his activism and public service. TWU Civic Engagement encourages students, faculty and staff to make this holiday a day ON rather than a day OFF.

This year, the Center for Student Development, in collaboration with the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach and the Center for Student Leadership, will be hosting a multi-event week focused on uplifting and furthering Dr. King’s legacy. be joining the Denton MLK Jr. Rec Center for a day of learning and service. We want to encourage students to engage in this educational service oriented event to further help them understand social issues and concepts. Details for the event are still being solidified, but as they become available we will update this webpage.

Student Organizations - as well as individual students - are encouraged to participate!

MLK Jr. Week of Service and Celebration Events

Morning of Service
January 16, 9am
Join other community organizations in the revitalization and cleanup of Champion-Macedonia Historic Black Cemetery. This event will kick off TWU's MLK Jr. Week of Celebration and Service! 

If you live on the Denton campus and do not have transportation to the site you can note that in the RSVP form on Pioneer Engage and we will follow-up about a shuttle service.
 
Celebration March
January 16, 1pm
DIO, NPHC, and the CSD are hosting an afternoon march to the Denton Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center. We will all gather to create posters that honor Dr. King's lasting legacy at the TWU Fountain and then march together through downtown Denton to the MLK Center. Come write your goals and dreams for the semester to share with others and be inspired! See you at the Performance Center in the Student Union!
 
VDR Lunch & Learn
January 18, 12pm
Attend VDR training and become certified to register community members to vote in upcoming elections! You will leave this training as a certified Volunteer Deputy Registrar for Denton County. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP in Pioneer Engage.
 
Legacy Reflection Dinner
January 18, 6pm
Please join speaker Dr. Tiffany M. Gethers, the co-founder & president of The 2Gethers Foundation, whose specific purpose is to address barriers that first-generation students face so that they can successfully persist through higher education and attain a college degree. You must RSVP on Pioneer Engage to attend the event. See you there!
 
Supply Drive
January 16 - January 27 
Support Lovepacs Denton as they supply Denton ISD students with snacks and meals during holiday breaks. Lovepacs was created in order to provide meals to students who would otherwise go hungry during school holidays. Helping Hands Service Ambassadors are hosting this drive from January 16th (1/16) through January 27th (1/27). Donations can be delivered between 8:00am-5:00pm each weekday at the Center for Student Development.
