The Nancy Johnson Coyle Endowment Fund

The Nancy Johnson Coyle Endowment Fund is the first named scholarship for a degree in women’s studies in Texas.

The fund serves as a legacy to loving wife, dog owner, TWU graduate and philanthropist Nancy Johnson Coyle. Nancy came from a family of strong women and was profoundly impacted by the knowledge she gained while taking her first women’s studies course at TWU.

Family, friends and instructors remember Nancy as a giving person and as a "good friend, always pleasant and friendly, laughing easily at a good story." She is also remembered for her sense of humor, her enthusiasm for women’s studies and for her empowerment of women as she encouraged them to pursue higher education.

She was born May 30, 1957 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and relocated to the Denton area in 1968. She graduated from Denton High School then worked at the Denton Municipal Airport and Boeing Electronics. She also served as an instructor for the Denton chapter of the American Red Cross, and was a member of the Missouri State Genealogical Society and also the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

She died in 1998 from a prolonged illness. She is survived by her two brothers, her husband, TWU Health Studies graduate Doug Coyle, and her cousin Jim Damico, who embarked on a cross-country benefit bicycle ride in 2001 to raise funds for her memorial.
