Open Letter to TWU Students

Friday, August 28 - Open letter to TWU students from Monica Mendez-Grant, Ed.D., Vice President for Student Life...

Dear Pioneers,

We are so glad to see some of you back on our campuses. We know that many more of you are choosing to remain with us online this year, and seeing you virtually is almost as exciting!

For those of you who are on our campuses either full- or part-time, please remember to do your part—protect yourself and protect others. If you have watched the news, you have seen many universities shut down again after only just reopening due to COVID-19 outbreaks on their campuses.

You’ve probably heard about the glitter analogy, but I think it really illustrates the spread of COVID-19. We all know how messy glitter can be. If you have it on your hands, you can usually wash it off if you catch it in time, but if you don’t, every door knob, every chair, every handle will soon have glitter on it that spreads to the next person who touches it.

If we are going to remain open—and avoid the glitter spread—it is going to take all of us. That means that your experience this year will be different. It means we will continue to ask you to wash your hands, wear your masks and avoid going to crowded bars. It means maintaining social distance and staying away from off-campus parties and smaller in-person gatherings as much as possible. It means honestly evaluating your health and seeking medical care at the first sign of symptoms.

We know that these requests may feel difficult at times, but your willing compliance with these requests will be the determining factor in how things go for the rest of the semester, and perhaps the rest of the academic year.

At the end of the day, we want the same things—we want you to graduate and be successful in your future endeavors. You all are here because you have academic goals. We are here to support those goals, and we are committed to doing our part to keep our campuses as safe and clean as possible.

Help us help you succeed! Remember the Pioneer Pact. Stay safe, stay well, and have a great year!

With Pioneer Pride,
Monica Mendez-Grant, Ed.D
Vice President for Student Life
