For Students
The Student Government Association is here to represent YOU! The SGA does that in a variety of ways, including collecting students' suggestions surrounding campus issues, creating and researching resolutions that advocate for change on campus, outreach and education about current SGA initiatives and resolutions through tabling, gathering students' feedback on topics of student concern through Minerva Opinion Boards, advocating for students in meetings with campus leaders and administrators and hosting programs designed to enhance the student experience on campus.
The SGA also provides information regarding resources and services available to students both on and off campus including the Pioneer Discount Program and student resources reserve, which lists information and links to some of the most commonly asked-about and utilized resources on campus.
Suggestion Box
The SGA Suggestion Box enables students to submit thoughts, ideas, questions, and concerns. SGA members will use various strategies to address each submission, depending on the information received. These strategies include writing a resolution, meeting with campus stakeholders to discuss the issue, hosting a town hall to gather feedback from more students and bring campus stakeholders together to discuss the issue, and creating additional opportunities for outreach and education regarding current campus policies or support services.
Find our online suggestion box on our Pioneer Engage page!
Resolutions
Writing, researching, and passing resolutions is one of the biggest ways SGA creates long-term sustained change on campus. Anyone can write a resolution to submit to the Student Senate for research. Resolutions need to have the following attributes:
- Whereas statements set up the problem or concern and why it is an issue on campus. Use these statements to identify stakeholders and narrate the campus concern
- Resolve statements describe the desired outcome. Use this section to state the desired outcome. Examples of past resolutions can be found on the SGA Resolution Database.
Submit a resolution idea through our form on Pioneer Engage!
Open Forum
Want to share your thoughts with Senators? A student government open forum is a time set aside for students, staff, and organizations to speak at a student government meeting. The purpose of an open forum is to provide a space for students to share their opinions and take action. Up to five (5) students may speak for two (2) minutes at each senate meeting on a topic of importance they would like the senators to hear.
In order to speak, a student must complete the request form no less than two (2) days prior to a Student Senate meeting. The Speaker of the Senate will contact students who have requested to speak to confirm their request and meeting details. The Speaker may deny a speech that is unduly repetitious of one previously given or if the speech is off topic from what they originally requested.
Submit an Open Forum Speaker Request on our Pioneer Engage page.
Programs
Pioneer Discount Program - Students, faculty, and staff can receive a discount a local businesses just by flashing their TWU ID! Check out the list of participating businesses. Vendors interested in joining the Pioneer Discount Program can complete the interested vendor form on our Pioneer Engage Page.
Minerva Opinion Board - Minerva Opinion Boards are designed to collect feedback from students by hosting events designed to address topics of interest to students and collect various student perspectives. Students will have the opportunity to engage directly with SGA members during face-to-face Minerva Opinion Board events or take part in a quick online poll via social media to share thoughts on specific topics.
Events
Greet Your Government - Greet Your Government is an opportunity for students to meet with their current SGA representatives and learn more about Student Government. Students will be able to get more information about current resolutions, upcoming events, and ways to get involved.
Night Walk - Night Walk serves as a way for students and administrators to connect while identifying areas of concern on campus. Each year, FLOC with the assistance of the SGA collaborate with campus partners to walk around campus identifying safety and accessibility concerns. At the conclusion of the event, a report is drafted documenting each area of concern and is shared with administrators and other stakeholders.
Tabling - Tabling is the primary way SGA members are able to connect with their constituents on campus. Regular tabling is held throughout the semester in various locations on campus in order to connect with students, promote upcoming events, and receive feedback on current campus concerns.
Campus Elections - Campus Elections occur once a year in the spring semester, and are coordinated by the Judicial Branch. Visit our campus elections page to get more information about the available positions and to view important dates, deadlines, and rules of campaigning for office.
