MLS student earns Career Development Grant
Dec. 13, 2023 — DENTON — Urania Chambers, a current Master of Library Science student, has been awarded a Career Development Grant for $18,500 from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to fund her education and a project.
“I was in disbelief when I read the email. I kept reading and re-reading the email to check and see if it was a scam,” Chambers said. “Once it was finalized, I was ecstatic!”
She will focus on educating K-12 students in technology and information literacy in her project titled, “Library as the Technological Hub of Information: Creating a Legacy of Informed Individuals.”
“AAUW gives awards to individuals who they believe will make a huge impact on the community,” Chambers said. “I tried to demonstrate a clear plan of what I want to accomplish and my desire to make a difference in our society.”
Through her project, Chambers hopes to teach students how to choose credible sites on the internet, protect their digital footprint, and access databases and resources in an effective way. But her goal is to expand that education to the rest of the family and teachers in the classroom.
“I want to create a legacy of informed individuals, inspiring students to become information experts and advocates for the library as a crucial information center,” Chambers said. “I am confident that, by completing this project, I can demonstrate how I can contribute to building a society that values and utilizes library resources.”
She intends to publish an article on the project with a start planned in spring 2024 at an elementary school library.
The AAUW’s Career Development Grant provides funding to women who hold a bachelor’s degree and are preparing to advance or change careers or re-enter the workforce in education; health and medical sciences; science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); or social sciences.
