TWU to celebrate women and girls in STEM Feb. 10-13

Feb. 6, 2025 – DENTON – In conjunction with International Day for Girls and Women and Girls in Science, TWU's Office of STEM Collaborations will hold the Celebration of Women and Girls in STEM Feb. 10-13.

The celebration will recognize the contributions of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine, and in anticipation of Texas Girls in STEM Day on March 1.

Events will take place at the Ann Stuart Science Complex atrium 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Feb. 10-11 and 1-3 p.m. on Feb. 12-13. There will be pizza, STEM-oriented games, rock painting and opportunities tables.

As part of the Office of STEM Collaborations' community service initiative, TWU students will also prepare STEM kits for third-grade classes at Alexander Elementary School in Denton. The kits will include journals, pencils, models, rulers, thermometers, STEM games, stickers, motivational signage and personalized encouragement cards.

"We're trying to make students aware," said Diana Elrod, Director of the Center for Student Research and coordinator of the Office of STEM Collaborations and Initiatives. "We decided that we wanted to work with a school. We're putting together classroom kits that are going to have really cool materials in them. We're developing a relationship with Alexander Elementary, and they're very excited. To me, that's probably the most important part."

There will also be a reception celebrating TWU's women in science, held on Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. in the Science Research Complex. Attendance for the reception is by invitation only.

The Office of STEM Collaborations and Initiatives advances excellence in STEM education and research through centralized leadership, coordination and support services, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment that transcends traditional college, department and division boundaries.
