Export Controls are federal laws that govern how technology, technical data, technical assistance, and items or materials (from software to satellites and more) are physically or electronically exported, shipped, transmitted, transferred, or shared from the U.S. to foreign countries, persons, or entities.
Most of TWU’s academic research qualifies as “fundamental research,” which is generally not subject to export control restrictions. However, certain activities—such as working with controlled technologies, engaging in international collaborations, or traveling abroad with research equipment—may trigger export control requirements.
Per TWU Policy URP: 02.450 , TWU employees who wish to take laptop computers and/or other electronic devices out of the country must contact TWU IT Solutions to obtain a loaner laptop and complete an institutional certification form before traveling.
