Texas Woman’s Theatre Program announces 2021-2022 season

August 5, 2021 – DENTON – The TWU Theatre Program’s 2021-2022 season features a modern take on a classic drama, a new spin on a seasonal favorite, a resonant exploration of race and policing in America, and a farce in verse that will leave you smiling.

The season opens Oct. 6 with “Every Human: Tales of the Unexplained,” adapted and directed by Associate Professor Steven Young. Originally titled “Everyman,” and written in the 15th century, this classic morality play has been adapted to tell the story of all humans facing judgment and the reality of their mortality.

In November, just in time for the start of the holiday season, TWU Theatre presents the crowd pleasing “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol,” written by Tom Mula and directed by Dr. Patrick Bynane. Jacob Marley may be dead but his story is far from over as he grapples with his life’s decisions and is offered one final chance at redemption. All he needs to do is convince “you-know-who” to change his avaricious ways.

In February, TWU Theatre is proud to present “Until The Flood” by Dael Orlandersmith. This Pulitzer Prize finalist will be directed by Dr. Noah Lelek and explores the impact of the 2014 police killing of Michael Brown Jr. in Ferguson, Missouri and the lasting impact that murder has had on all communities. Theatre for social justice is an area of specialization for Dr. Lelek, who leads TWU’s Interactive Theatre Troupe.

The final play of the season is “Lickspittles, Buttonholers and Damned Pernicious Go-Betweens,” written by Johnna Adams and directed by Dr. Patrick Bynane. This delightful farce, written in multiple forms of verse, is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face as it makes its ridiculous way through Napoleonic Europe. Join us as a ragtag bunch of delightfully amoral courtiers invent and then destroy flying machines, duel with the Duke of Wellington, discover the decapitated head of Marie Antoinette and, just possibly, save Europe.

Tickets for all shows are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Additionally, TWU Theatre offers a pay-what-you-can option available at every Saturday 2 p.m. performance. Social distancing measures will be observed for every show and masks are strongly recommended.
