Making Changes to Benefits
Staying informed about your benefits and available options ensures that you and your family are adequately covered as life changes occur.
If you need to make changes to your benefits after your first 31 days of employment, it’s crucial to understand the process surrounding Qualifying Life Events (QLEs). Employees have a 31-day window to modify their coverage when they experience a qualifying life change. Common QLEs include:
- Marriage
- Birth or adoption of a child
- Change in employment status
- Relocation outside the service area
- Divorce or court orders for health coverage
- Changes in Medicare or Medicaid eligibility
- Significant changes in health care costs
Annual enrollment typically occurs each summer in July, with specific dates determined by the Employees Retirement System (ERS). Notifications regarding enrollment details are sent via email and U.S. Mail from both ERS and the TWU Office of Human Resources.
To ensure your changes are processed, please act within the 31-day timeframe. If you miss this window, you will need to wait for the next enrollment period. Remember, changes generally take effect on the first day of the month following your QLE, except in cases like childbirth or adoption, where coverage starts on the event date.
For questions or assistance with making changes, please contact the TWU Office of Human Resources Benefits Team.
