Asiyah Martin
Asiyah Martin is a multidisciplinary dance artist hailing from Houston with a passion for fusing movement and media. Trained extensively in modern, jazz, Afro-Caribbean and ballet, she has had the opportunity to hone her skills at the Dallas Black Dance Theater's summer workshop, where she attended on scholarship. Martin's teaching journey has led her through competitive dance studios and teams across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
In 2018, she earned her BA in dance from Texas Woman’s University, where her choreography was presented at the American College Dance Association conference. She was selected to perform a solo at the prestigious Gala. Upon graduation, Martin transitioned into freelance videography, creating dynamic content for dancers and artists, ranging from promotional materials to music videos. Her portfolio includes collaborations with Pure Movement Dance Company, Missouri State University, KnowBoxx Dance Theatre and Kilgore College.
Martin was also television producer for a Dallas mega-church before returning to TWU to pursue her MFA. Currently in her third year, her research focuses on integrating text and spoken word into the choreographic process. Most recently, she was awarded the AmplifyHer Impact grant to transform her culminating MFA project into a dance film, further pushing the boundaries of her multidisciplinary work.
