TWU researchers attend green chemistry conference
Aug. 8, 2022 – DENTON – Faculty and students from Texas Women's University Chemistry and Biochemistry attended the 26th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference held in Reston, Virginia, in June.
The conference, hosted by the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry Institute, is the longest-running international conference dedicated to promoting green chemistry and sustainable practices in research and education by application of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. The theme for this year’s conference was “Thinking in Systems: Designing for Sustainable Use.”
Sessions ranged from new technologies in green chemistry to highlighting “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Respect as Key Components of Chemistry and Engineering Curriculum.”
The poster session featured entries selected for their relevance to the conference’s theme. Of the 27 posters selected, two were from TWU. Professor John Beatty and his student, Alice McNeill, presented a poster from recent research, “An approach to reduce atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide and fix nitrogen by CO2/N2 non-thermal plasma processing.”
Professor Richard Sheardy and student Raven Gallenstein, along with co-authors Beatty and Gustavo Salazar with student Kiersten Ivy, presented a poster “Assessing the impact of plastics, their degradation products, and their green chemical remediation in the soil, water and air of North Texas: A department wide undergraduate research project." It was one of two posters discussing green chemistry education.
