Masters student to hold thesis exhibition
May 31, 2023 – DENTON – Texas Woman's University visual arts master's student Caitlin Spencer will put forward an art exhibition entitled "The Body as Voice" as her thesis project beginning June 1 in the TWU Fine Arts Building East and West Galleries.
Spencer curated the exhibition, which will feature works by Dallas/Fort Worth artists Ari Brielle, Missy Burton, Magaly Cantu, Tiara Unique Francois, Nitashia Johnson, Tina Medina, Eliana Miranda, Karla Ramirez-Santin and Deyjah Stewart.
The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. through June 18. A reception and artists' panel talk will take place on June 4 from 5-7 p.m.
"The Body as Voice" centers around the Intersectional experiences of Black and Latinx women and the ways they express identity through the body in art. The works cover a diverse exploration of spaces and topics such as memory, family ties and heritage, community, self-care and self-love practices, women’s healthcare, dysphoria, embodied presence, borders and immigration, mental health and environmentalism. Materials found in the works including painting, photography, sculpture and video.
Spencer pursued an interdisciplinary degree in art history and women's and genders studies. Through her thesis research and background in museum and gallery curation, "The Body as Voice" serves as her final thesis exhibition.
