A Yellow Rose Project opens Aug. 11
Aug. 4, 2025 — DENTON — The TWU Fine Arts Building East/West Galleries will host “A Yellow Rose Project,” an exhibit celebrating the centennial of the 19th Amendment, Aug. 11-Sept. 5.
The exhibit is a photographic collaboration of 106 women across the country inspired by women lobbying for the vote 100 years ago wearing yellow roses, a symbol of support for the suffrage movement, at the legislative session in Tennessee.
Launched in 2020 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, “A Yellow Rose Project” was created by Meg Griffiths, associate professor of photography at Texas Woman’s University, and Frances Jakubek, director of exhibitions and operations at the Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York City.
The collection’s photographs deal with women’s rights, the vote, and obstacles faced by women in 1920 and today. The photographs draw on personal histories and connect with the present. Some are portraits of individuals, domestic spaces and protest scenes. Others use archival images, news clippings, chemical processes or embroidery to illuminate women’s continuing struggle with power, sexuality, choice and endurance.
“Sojourner Truth said women’s fates were linked but not because they were the same,” Griffiths said. “Our collection reflects women’s many diverse paths.”
Griffiths and Jakubek invited women to look back and explore this narrative.
“The work is emotional,” Jakubek said. “What most surprises me is the intimacy of the imagery. My hope is that putting this out in the world will help to connect, strengthen and amplify women’s voices.”
“A Yellow Rose Project” will conclude with a talk and book signing for A Yellow Rose Project: Responses, Reflections, and Reactions to the Nineteenth Amendment. The book signing will take place on Sept. 4 at 3:30 p.m. in room 101 of the Fine Arts Building, followed by an artist panel discussion, "How Far Have We Come In 100 Years?,” and a closing reception.
