Capitol Preservation

Dealey Decherd Herndon is committed to historic preservation and to Texas. Ms. Herndon has helped preserve some of Texas’ most historic icons, including the Texas State Capitol. Ms. Herndon was public member of the State Preservation Board from 1987 to 1991, then she moved into the role of executive director of the agency from April 1991 to September 1995. Her responsibilities as Executive Director included the oversight and management of one of the largest historic preservation projects in the country, the $190 million Texas Capitol Preservation and Extension Project. Under Ms. Herndon’s leadership and guidance the project was completed on its original schedule and within budget while achieving the highest quality standards. She received the 41st Annual Preservation Award in 2001.

Following the completion of the Capitol Preservation and Extension Project, Ms. Herndon opened her own project management/construction management firm in Austin. As president of Herndon, Stauch & Associates, she has managed a project list that includes the Caldwell County Courthouse Restoration, the Women’s Museum in Dallas and the Austin Museum of Art. She also served as project coordinator for the $80 million Texas State History Museum and serves on the board of the Heritage Society of Austin.
