Unemployment resources for TWU students

Mar. 31, 2020 — DENTON — All of our communities are reeling from the effects of COVID-19 (coronavirus), and we know that some of our TWU students are having a particularly difficult time due to furloughs and layoffs.

If you are one of the millions who have been laid off, there are many resources that may help. The recent federal stimulus package expanded unemployment benefits to many who would normally be ineligible to apply. Gov. Greg Abbott waived the 10-day waiting period usually tied to unemployment benefits, and the Texas Workforce Commission’s website has a section dedicated to the COVID-19 response.

Additionally, there are local resources to help you navigate and file for additional assistance:

• The City of Denton has put together a comprehensive resource for small businesses and job seekers.
• Resources on the City of Dallas’s site also include childcare resources, food and grocery assistance and more.
• The Greater Houston Partnership even provides “work safe” resources as well as options for affected employees.

As you negotiate what may be a time of uncertainty, experts suggest that you consider a few proactive steps if you are laid off or furloughed:

• Make sure you know when you can expect your last paycheck.
• Ask if there are any severance options, including an extension of healthcare benefits or career transition services in addition to lump-sum payments.
• Gather contact information from your manager and ask if he or she will provide a reference.
• Update your LinkedIn profile and keep in touch with key connections.

Also remember that there are resources at TWU to help you as well. While the Career Connections Center has gone virtual, webinars and events scheduled for the remainder of the semester, their resources page provides access to a plethora of content, and you can still reach out to career consultants with any questions.
