TWU’s Little Chapel-in-the-Woods receives more accolades amid shutdown

Apr. 17, 2020 — DENTON — This week, TWU’s Little Chapel-in-the-Woods was selected by the readers of the Denton Record Chronicle and DentonRC.Com as a Best of Denton Winner for 2020 in the Wedding & Event venue category and was also selected as one of the top chapels in Texas by Here Comes the Guide, a wedding planning website.

The news, however, is bittersweet for couples and the Texas Woman’s University community. The chapel is currently closed until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

Since the beginning of the shutdown, more than 30 weddings have been cancelled or postponed so far, which include all April and May weddings. Many of those with weddings scheduled in June are waiting longer to make decisions, hoping they can still walk the aisle amid the warm, golden light of the chapel’s chandeliers.

According to Brittany Jasper-Hunter, Little Chapel-in-the-Woods coordinator, the closure has impacted more than just weddings. All internal and external reservations for the spring semester have been postponed or canceled, including Meditation Mondays, Pioneers Remembered, recitals, student organization inductions and more.

“Spring semester is always an exciting time for the chapel and is one of our peak wedding seasons,” said Jasper-Hunter.

Staff are working with clients and offering options to help mitigate concerns. Wedding parties can postpone their wedding date up to one year from their original date for free, or they can receive a full refund if they choose to cancel in accordance with the chapel’s guidelines.

“We are disappointed for our clients, but we are looking forward to resuming operations as soon as the safety of our community is confirmed,” she said.

With its parabolic arches, stained glass windows, and rich history, the chapel has been a favorite spot for couples since its official dedication in 1939. It frequently receives top ratings from couples and often is included in other rankings, like WeddingWire, one of the top virtual wedding planning resources.

Decisions regarding the Little Chapel-in-the-Woods returning to full operation will be based on decisions made by the university and informed by guidelines set forth by the Center for Disease Control.
