TWU Career Connections opens applications for Urban Fellows Program

Aug. 31, 2020 — DENTON — TWU’s Career Connections Center will accept applications for its Urban Fellows Program September 1-18. The program provides financial support to students who intern with nonprofit, community or government organizations--positions that are traditionally unpaid.

For the fall 2020 semester, 10 students will receive $1,000 scholarships for the 80-hour, 8-week internship opportunities. The program is open to both graduate and undergraduate students who meet eligibility requirements.

“The Urban Fellows Program helps ensure our servant-leaders at TWU have opportunities to gain valuable, real-world experience with organizations that typically are unable to pay for internships,” said Greg Shirley, Ed.D, associate director of employer relations, technology and operations. “It’s a win-win opportunity for our students, organizations and Texas Woman’s.”

With funding from the Jane Nelson Institution for Women’s Leadership, Career Connections launched the program in the midst of the pandemic and provided support to 25 students during the summer.

The students interned with a variety of organizations, including: the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County, the Dallas Area Rape Crisis center and Baylor Scott & White Health and Wellness Center to name a few.

“As an accounting intern, I worked directly with the chief financial officer at the Housing Crisis Center,” said Violet Goforth, who is currently pursuing her MBA at TWU. “Opportunities for mentorship are important, and the Urban Fellows Program connected me with the best mentor. I am able to walk away with new skills, experiences and professional relationships while having served my community.”

A survey conducted by Career Connections reveals that 96 percent of students who participated in the summer program felt they gained relevant experience, and 96 percent believed they were given responsibilities that helped them apply the knowledge and skills they learned in the classroom.

Students interested in the program must complete the application. Participants will be selected by the Career Connections Center scholarship committee. For questions or additional information, contact Brookelyn Bush at bnickelberry@twu.edu.
