Student Spotlight: SGA President, Theo Sam-Brew

Feb. 9, 2022 — DENTON — As Student Government Association (SGA) President, Theodora “Theo” Sam-Brew wants to encourage more students to get involved with SGA at TWU.

SGA represents all members of the student body. It not only provides advocacy on behalf of students, but also it helps students find answers to questions, holds educational forums and offers a way to connect with others.

While Sam-Brew reiterates the importance of SGA to affect change, she also emphasizes personal growth as a reason to get involved.

“I have gained so much confidence by being part of SGA,” said Sam-Brew. “I have learned how to stand my ground when making decisions, and it has pushed me beyond my comfort zone.”

She says one of the most important roles in SGA is that of senator. “Senators do more hands-on work and often help facilitate communication between departments and students when there are issues.”

The student senate acts as the legislative branch of SGA and serves as the active voice of the student body. Notably, the senate passed legislation regarding TWU's smoking policy in 2011 and has worked toward the continued improvement of facilities. In 2015, students, led by SGA, the TWU Board of Regents and the Texas Legislature voted to approve a referendum to increase student fees to fund the Student Union at Hubbard Hall, which has become the gathering place on the Denton campus.

According to Kyle Voyles, Executive Director of the Center for Student Development and SGA advisor, there is always an opportunity for students to make their voices heard through SGA and an opportunity to serve like Sam-Brew.

“Theo is hardworking and does not put herself first in any situation. She has a true attitude of a servant leader.”
