CAPS to offer several group therapy options

Aug. 19, 2022 — DENTON — Group therapy can be an ideal choice for addressing concerns in a supportive, safe environment that promotes personal growth, relationship development and healing, and this semester TWU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will offer several options.

Currently-enrolled students are eligible for unlimited group therapy sessions at no cost. Sessions will be offered virtually via Google Meet, but interested students must contact CAPS to complete the group screening process prior to joining any group.

According to Dr. Angela Adams, staff psychologist at CAPS, group leaders discuss norms and ground rules with students at the start of group therapy.

“We explain to them how confidentiality operates in a group setting and ask that they all respect each other’s confidentiality. We also elicit their involvement in the group rules process and reiterate the importance of respecting diverse opinions,” said Adams.

Adams also explains that some of the module-based group therapy sessions offered this fall are designed to build skills, and there is no expectation to share feelings. These skills-based groups, Coping with Anxiety and Coping with Depression, will each be offered twice this semester and will meet for one hour for four consecutive weeks.

Other sessions will begin at various times throughout the semester. Most will meet weekly for 8-10 group sessions and typically include 6-10 people, although frequency and group minimums may vary. In addition to closed groups with defined start dates for the entire cohort, there are also two open groups that allow students to attend and join throughout the semester. Fall sessions will include:
