Newman Civic Fellowship
About
The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program that recognizes and supports student public problem solvers at Campus Compact member institutions. Fellows are nominated by their president or chancellor based on their potential for public leadership and their work with communities. Throughout the fellowship year, Campus Compact provides students with opportunities to nurture their assets and help them develop strategies for social change—creating a network of connected and engaged student leaders who can support one another in making positive change.
The Judicial Branch of the Student Government Association shall be in charge of collecting nominations to send to the Chancellor of Texas Woman’s University. Questions about the process can be sent to the SGA Chief Justice.
Requirements
According to Campus Compact, candidates should be:
- Engaged in collaborative action with others from campus or from surrounding communities in order to create long-term social change.
- Taken action in addressing issues of inequality and political polarization.
- Demonstrate the motivation and potential for effective long-term civic engagement.
Candidates must:
- Be currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program at your institution (with preference for undergraduate students).
- Have at least one year of their education remaining (either at their current institution or at a different one) at the date of nomination so that they are enrolled as a student for the full duration of their fellowship.

- Commit to being present and fully engage in offered fellowship activities.
- Not be on academic or disciplinary probation from the university.
- Have at least a 2.75 GPA at the time of application.

After the application closes, candidates will be sent information regarding scheduling interviews. Interviews will be conducted in person in the SGA office, room 1527. The interview team will consist of the current Newman Civic Fellow and if able, their program mentor, a representative that is either appointed by or is the Director of the Center for Student Involvement, and a member of the Student Government Association.
Once all interviews have been conducted, the interview team will send their list of recommendations to the Dean of Students for review before being sent to the Vice President for Student Life. Final candidates will be recommended to the Chancellor, who will have final say on the nominated Newman Civic Fellow. Once the Chancellor notifies the Supreme Court of their choice in April, the nominated Newman Fellow will be notified.
