Sheppard and Canales Receive 2021 SLIS Alumni Awards
April Sheppard is the recipient of the 2021 Ann Barnett Service Award while Beatrice Canales received the S. Janice Kee Continuing Education Award, both presented by the Texas Woman’s University School of Library & Information Studies.
Sheppard (MLS 2005) is currently the Assistant Library Director at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Ark. She is involved in the American Library Association (ALA), specifically as coordinator of the Social Responsibilities Round Table. She developed the Feminist Task Force’s Herstory through Activism: Women, Libraries, and Activism Program. On the campus of ASU, Sheppared is involved with the University Diversity & Affirmative Action Committee, the Library Committee, and is a certified Title IX Advisor. In her community, she is CERT certified and a member of Arkansas State’s Community Emergency Response Team. Sheppard currently serves on a total of 16 university committees and six ALA groups.
Canales (MLS 2019) is currently an Academic Unit Assistant at San Antonio College where she has been for the past 15 years. Her job encompasses both academic librarianship and instructional design. Canales is involved in the Open Educational Resources movement. With award money received as part of the S. Janice Kee Continuing Education Award, she would like to earn her Creative Commons certification to become an expert in open licensing and the commons.
