Author Michael Sampson to speak at Spicola Forum
March 26, 2024 — DENTON — Author Michael Sampson, PhD, will speak at the 56th annual Rose Spicola Forum in Literacy, themed Literacy for All, on Saturday, April 27.
Sampson, a Fulbright Scholar, teacher, author and professor of literacy at St. John’s University in New York City, is known for his collaborations with Bill Martin, Jr. on such children’s books as:
- Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3
- Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?
- Armadillo Antics
An always entertaining speaker, Sampson is known for his high-energy performances. He brings with him his experience in teaching kindergarten through sixth grade as well as his knowledge from working with Martin, his lifelong friend, mentor and collaborator.

More information on the Rose Spicola Forum in Literacy
This year’s forum runs from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at MCL Room 101 on Saturday, April 27. Speaker proposals for the event are requested by Monday, April 15.
Theme: Literacy for All
Literacy is for all: all ages – early childhood (ages 0-5) through middle school (6-8th grade), high school (9-12th grade), adulthood, all languages, cultures and families, all backgrounds, abilities, learning styles and learning needs. Literacy can connect to the past, present and prepare for the future.
The forum is free to all and will include breakout sessions to choose from. Also included:
- Free professional learning sponsored by Literacy and Learning
- Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit offered with documentation of attendance
- Books and teaching tools for sale
- Door prizes
The forum also requests speaker proposals by April 15.
Presentations should be 45 minutes long (including question and answer) regarding one of the following preferred topics:
- Preschool, Prekindergarten, Kindergarten (ages 3-5 years)
- English Learners (EL)
- Bilingual/Dual Language (BIL/DL)
- Literacy Leadership (LL)
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades (ages 6-8)
- 4th, 5th, 6th grades (ages 9-11)
- Middle school (ages 12-14)
- Secondary school (ages 15-18)
- Post-secondary (ages 18 and older)
- Aspiring Authors and Illustrators
