Planning for Autism in Communities and Schools - Perceptions of Persons in Communities and Schools

Purpose:

These studies aim to determine perceptions of people with autism and people in communities and schools regarding barriers and supports for community and school participation of persons with autism. Using stratified purposeful convenience sampling to achieve maximum variation, participants represent community connections from the following areas are listed as National Council on Leadership and Disability transition outcomes. These areas are learning, connecting, thriving, working, and leading.

Rationale:

  1. Results will enable researchers to develop a better understanding of people with autism and people in the community and the kinds of support they need to make communities and schools autism-friendly, also known as being compatible with the unique sensory, communication, and social/behavioral differences associated with autism.
  2. Results will provide information about the perceptions of people with autism that can be compared to the perceptions of individuals in communities and schools regarding barriers and supports to their community and school participation.
