New men’s organization the first at TWU

Jeffrey Williams, DNP, named to the DFW Great 100 Nurses list

May 23, 2023 — DALLAS — Texas Woman’s University has a unique mission as the country’s largest university system primarily for women. Now, there is a new organization at TWU Dallas with a focus of its own that seeks to set itself apart, at least at TWU. The American Association for Men in Nursing is the first organization at TWU geared toward men.

The TWU chapter of AAMN is open to any student, faculty or staff member with an interest in increasing the number of males entering the nursing profession and enhancing men’s health across the nation.

Jeffrey Williams, DNP, recent DFW Great 100 Nurses list honoree, is a board member of the national AAMN organization. In that role, he knew exactly where to point three students — Christian Guella, Michael Nelson and Rafa Mobarak — when they approached him this year with an interest in starting a male nursing student organization.

“Why not start a chapter of AAMN here on the Dallas campus?” Williams asked.

The new TWU Dallas chapter of AAMN recently established its presence during a new nursing student orientation session and connected with 15-20 students interested in joining the new chapter.

In the upcoming academic year, the nascent chapter has tentative plans for volunteer work including health screenings, a career day for TWU alumni to speak about the transition from student to novice nurses, and an advanced practice nursing career day that will welcome nurse practitioners, a certified midwife, clinical nurse specialists and a certified registered nurse anesthetist.
