TWU to host summer camps for kids

March 8, 2018 Looking for something fun for your children to do this summer? Texas Woman’s University is hosting several camps during its 2018 summer semesters on the university’s Denton campus. Camps range from fashion and nutrition, to science and sports, and cater to ages preschool through college.

Arts and Science Camps

Creative Dance for Families: May 4-June 22
Fridays
10:15-11 a.m.
Cost: $80 (full 8 weeks)
Ages: Walking toddler to 3 years old
This camp provides a caring and fun environment to explore dance with your little one. Together, caregiver and child will explore rhythm, songs, movement games, gross motor learning and creative play to be used at home and in future dance classes. To register, pay for one child (parent is free). Siblings in this age range are welcome and receive a discounted registration. Wild Things! Summer Dance Camp: June 4-8
9 a.m. to noon
Cost: $175
Ages: 6-8 years old
Inspired by Maurice Sendak’s classic book, dancers explore the wilderness of their imaginations in this adventurous dance camp. Campers will explore how emotions are expressed through movement, learn a variety of dance styles, engage in team building exercises, have fun completing arts/craft projects and create a magical culminating dance performance. Broadway Mash-up! Summer Dance Camp: June 4-8
9 a.m. to noon
Cost: $175
Ages: 9-11 years old
Students will ignite their unique imaginations as they explore storytelling, character building and fundamental ballet, jazz and modern techniques. Summer Weekly Teen/Adult Dance Classes: June 4-July 23
Beg./Int. Ballet/Modern: Monday 6-7 p.m.
Int./Adv. Ballet/Modern: Monday 7-8 p.m.
Cost: $80 (full 8 weeks), $15 (drop-in rate)
Enjoy a fusion of ballet and modern dance techniques in this class for teens and adults. Creative Dance for Preschoolers: June 6-August 1 (no class July 4)

Students will explore the fundamentals of dance—spatial awareness, timing and rhythm, shapes and movement qualities—through creative and playful skill-building activities in this camp. Junior Fashion Design Camp: June 10-August 3
Camp Cost: $425 (early registration), $460 (after May 1)
Housing Cost: $350 (early bird housing rate through May 1), $375 (housing rate after May 1)
Ages: Preteen and teens

Field to Fork, From the Sports Field to the Dinner Plate: June 18-21
9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Cost: $300
Ages: 9-14 years old
Students will cook a nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner while learning how to enhance physical activity and sports performance with nutrition. Health in Action: July 16-17
9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Cost: $175
Ages: 9-14 years old
Students interested in how to match nutrition to their own personal needs can apply to attend this camp. On Day One, you will participate in health and nutrition activities, including learning culinary techniques in the kitchen. TWU/Air Force Association (AFA) CyberCamp: June 18-22
8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Cost: $10
Ages: Grade 9-12

Childhood Apraxia and Motor Planning (CHAMP) Camp: June 4-15
Cost: $250
The camp’s intensive therapy approach incorporates individualized motor learning and functional communication in play-based activities for children with motor planning challenges. It incorporates music, motor, and literacy activities in individual and group sessions as well as parent information meetings. Language and Feeding with Friends: June 18-July 26

LAFF is a group-feeding program for toddlers with sensory or motor-based feeding disorders. Tools for Talking: June 18-July 26

This comprehensive therapy experience combines individual therapy with small/large group activities in a fun atmosphere. Children will learn strategies to improve their speech fluency, increase their confidence in talking and practice newly acquired skills with other children who stutter. Parents will also be involved in parent education sessions where you will learn ways you can help your child manage the challenges of stuttering and practice fluency-enhancing techniques. Slots are available for individual therapy for children and adults in the areas of speech disorders (including Apraxia, Articulation and Phonological Disorders), voice, fluency, language and literacy are available. Sports Camps

Pioneer Pride Dance Team, Summer Kids Dance Clinic: July 9-12
9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Cost: $125
Ages: 4-completed 5th grade
Snack and a t-shirt are provided. Attire may be any colored leotard and leggings or gym clothes with jazz and ballet shoes being preferred but tennis/athletic shoes are acceptable. TWU Volleyball Youth Skills Camp: July 14-15
Cost: $100
Ages: 9-14 years old
This girls camp will provide a challenging experience based on skill level. With the focus on all aspects of volleyball, training groups will ensure campers’ instruction is at their skill levels. This camp is a must for players of all levels trying to brush up on fundamentals or learn the game for the first time. TWU Mini Volleyball Camp: July 14-15
Cost: $100
Ages: 4-8 years old
The co-ed camp is designed for students wanting to learn about the fundamentals of volleyball as well as movement and athleticism training. TWU coaches guide students through age-appropriate learning tools to prepare the young athletes for long-term success in volleyball and sports. TWU Volleyball Elite Position Camp: July 27-28
Cost: $200 commuters ($215 if registering after June 15), $215 resident ($275 if registering after June 15)
Ages: Grades 8-12
This volleyball camp is for girls with skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced. Campers will be given advanced skill training and development in position-specific groups. Setter training will cover footwork, set location, play sets, defense, emergency techniques and how to run an effective offense. Hitters will focus on footwork for attacking and transition, arm-swing mechanics, shot control and high-level attack training. In addition to positional groups, campers will be placed in small groups according to age, skill level and experience.
