TWU Theatre announces 2018-2019 season

June 6, 2018 – DENTON – The Texas Woman’s University Theatre Program’s 2018-2019 season will feature a stage version of a classic thriller, an epic drama lambasting the contradictions of war, a passionate examination of love and science, and a raucous Broadway masterpiece.

All performances will take place in TWU’s Redbud Theatre Complex, located on the northwest side of historic Hubbard Hall on the university’s Denton campus. Tickets for all shows are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. The season opens with The Birds by Conor McPherson, adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 novelette – the same novella that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s film. When relentless flocks of birds begin attacking people at high tide, two strangers find themselves vying for shelter and supplies. They begin to form a fragile bond; one that threatens to be shattered when another mysterious survivor arrives. Directed by assistant professor Noah Lelek, Ph.D., the show will run October 10-14, 2018.

In November, TWU Theatre will present Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, directed by associate professor Steven Young. The epic is set in 17^th century Europe during the Thirty Years War. Mother Courage follows the Protestant army with her cart and offspring in tow, hocking her wares and bargaining for the lives of her three children. The show will run November 14-18, 2018.

In February, program director Patrick Bynane, Ph.D., will direct Emilie: La Marquise de Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight by America’s most produced playwright, Lauren Gunderson. Madame du Châtelet - scientist, mathematician, translator of Isaac Newton and Voltaire’s lover - returns from the dead to set her affairs in order and answer the question: How does one choose between a life of the heart and a life of the mind?  The show will run February 13-17, 2019.

The season will conclude with the classic Broadway musical Cabaret by Masteroff, Kander and Ebb.  It will be directed by assistant professor Noah Lelek, Ph.D., with musical direction by assistant visiting professor Kelley Poché Rodriguez, Ph.D. Cabaret takes place at the Kit Kat Klub in 1931 Berlin. The seedy establishment boasts musical talents and sordid affairs all set amidst the “end of the world” during the Nazis’ rise to power. The show will run April 4-7 and 11-13, 2019.
