Profile

James Chenevert, PhD, taught in TWU’s Dept. of Music & Drama from 2002 to 2013, and served as department chair from 2002 to 2011. Prior to joining TWU he taught and served as music department chair at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His dissertation research comprised a translation and commentary of Simon Sechter’s 1854 treatise entitled Die grundsätze der musikalischen Komposition (The Principles of Musical Composition.)

Prior to retiring in 2013, Chenevert also served as a visiting evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music, the national accrediting agency for music in higher education. Other service activities included appointments as Secretary and Vice President of TWU’s Council of Chairs between 2005 and 2011, member of the board of directors of the Wisconsin Alliance for Composers from 1990 to 1997, member of the board of directors of Present Music in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1989 to 2000, composition adjudicator for the Metroplex Music Teachers Association and the PTA Reflections Program, and publisher’s reviewer of music theory textbooks for publishers McGraw-Hill, Prentice-Hall, and Routledge Press.

Chenevert has composed works for piano, guitar, chamber ensembles, voice, chorus, and electronic instruments. His works have been performed throughout the U.S. as well as at music festivals in France and Spain. Recordings may be heard on the compact discs Diplogenesis (Mapleshade Records) and Arbol del Olvido (916 Records.)
