Family Studies

A Bachelor of Science in Family Studies from TWU prepares you to interact with people of different ages and socioeconomic backgrounds to strengthen families and improve lives. Through this program, you’ll develop knowledge and skills to work effectively with people experiencing the effects of poverty, abuse, changes in family situations and more.

Career Opportunities

Father plays with daughter
  • Adoption and foster care agencies
  • Social service agencies ranging from child to geriatric
  • Outreach agencies
  • Adult and child protection advocacy

Students can also choose the family studies occupational therapy (OT) track in order to prepare for a graduate-level program in occupational therapy.

Available Tracks

  • Pre-Occupational Therapy
  • Family and Consumer Science
  • Mental Health Emphasis

Pre-Occupational Therapy

Students can choose the pre-occupational therapy (OT) track within family studies. These degree options provide the pre-requisite coursework to enable students to apply for graduate programs in OT.

NOTE: The undergraduate pre-OT track does not provide graduate-level coursework in occupational therapy. On the pre-OT track, students will graduate with a bachelor's degree in family studies.

Family and Consumer Science

The BS in Family Studies with a Family and Consumer Science emphasis prepares students for careers focused on family and community services, consumerism, and education.

Course content allows students to develop an interdisciplinary, broad-based view of how people interact with and are shaped by their environments. It is not a certification degree, so students interested in teacher certification within the field of family and consumer sciences will need additional coursework and training after the completion of the degree.

Mental Health

The BS in Family Studies Mental Health emphasis introduces students to the mental health field and prepares them for graduate programs in counseling and family therapy. These fields are among the top 10 fastest growing occupations.

Students will learn foundational concepts, explore mental health conditions, and learn to apply concepts and skills to work with children and families.
