Exercise Physiology & Biochemistry Laboratory
The Exercise Physiology & Biochemistry Laboratory (EPBL) supports the School of Health Promotion and Kinesiology's mission to improve health by investigating the mechanisms of exercise, environmental exercise strategies, and how those strategies may improve pathologies related to aging, sedentary lifestyle, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and neuromuscular disabilities/atrophies. Applied STEM methodologies are integral to our research, enhancing our studies’ scientific rigor and innovation. Undergraduate students in the TWU Honors programs may also conduct capstone research projects in the EPBL, engage in independent projects, or work as part of a research team on existing studies, all guided by faculty.
Our current areas of research include:
- Mechanisms of skeletal muscle growth and atrophy
- Acute and chronic responses to resistance exercise on skeletal muscle metabolism and health-related outcomes
- Exercise, heat stress, and nutritional factors on metabolism
- Alternative exercise modes to improve health-related measures of physical fitness and functional outcomes in populations with neuromuscular disorders
- Preventing and mitigating common health disparities among astronauts in microgravity
