6x6 Volleyball Rules

General

Players

Roster size is limited to 12 players:

  • Players can be TWU students, Fitness and Recreation members, faculty/staff
  • Teams must have a minimum of 6 players to register a team
  • Teams must have at least 4 players checked in to avoid a forfeit
  • Rosters are final at 5 p.m. the first Friday after your first game

Equipment

  • Jerseys: Teams are not required to have same color shirts/jerseys
  • Volleyballs: Fitness and Recreation will provide game balls – no substitutions
  • Attire: Players must wear athletic clothing, including shoes

Game Set Up and Time

  1. All matches will be 35 minutes
  2. Within the time period, the best two out of three games will be Rally scoring will be implemented during all games
  3. The first two sets will be played to 21; win by two, with a points cap of 25. If a third set is needed, it will be played to 15; win by two, with a points cap of 19 (if time expires during the first or second set, play will continue through the end of the second set. If needed, the third set will then be played – win by 2; hard cap of 5)
  4. Team Captains will play rock, paper, scissors, to determine who serves first or what side of the court their team wants. Teams will alternate the first serve of each set
  5. The server may have the ball in their possession for 10 seconds
  6. The serving order must alternate clockwise, with every member of team rotating out at least once during a court rotation
  7. Players must keep a continuous rotation to allow equal amount of play for each player
  8. Teams shall change sides on the court at the end of each game
  9. Players may rearrange their positions at the beginning of a new set
  10. Each team may take two, 30 second time outs, per match

Co-ed Rules

  1. Co-ed teams may have no more than three males on the court at the same time
  2. Males cannot be next to or behind/in front of each other before the serve. After the serve, players may move anywhere on the court, but will still be considered a front or back row player, relative to their position at the time of the serve
  3. This violation will result in a side out and loss of serve

Court Play

  1. The serve is playable if it hits the net and falls inbounds on the opposing team’s side of the court
  2. A player cannot block the serve
  3. If a player touches the ball or a ball touches any part of a player, he/she is considered as having played the ball
  4. Players may use any part of the body above the waist, including the waist, in playing the You cannot play the ball with your foot, unless your foot is on the ground
  5. Players are not permitted to scoop, hold, or throw the ball
  6. The ball must not visibly come to rest on the player’s hands, fingers, or any other part of the body
  7. A player may not make successive contacts of the ball, unless the first contact is an attempted block
  8. The ball must always be returned by the 3rd contact, unless a block is the initial contact in which case the ball must be returned by the 4th contact
  9. A ball may be recovered from the net, provided the player avoids contact with the net
  10. It is permissible to run out of bounds to play a ball, however, the ball must be returned within the net markers
  11. Regarding net play:
    • A player may not step under the net during any play
    • A player may reach over the net to complete a spike which was begun on their side of the net
    • Players cannot touch the This will result in a side out
  12. A back row player is allowed freedom in moving about the court, but they may not jump while being in front of the 10 foot line
  13. Players must not move until contact has been made with the ball on the serve
  14. If the ball hits the net antenna or anywhere outside of the court lines, it is declared out of bounds
  15. The ball may be played off the ceiling, as long as it stays on the same side of the net. If the ball hits the ceiling while crossing the net, it is declared a dead. A ball may not be played off the wall or court divider.

Behavior and Sportsmanship

It is the responsibility of the team captain to:

  • Ensure proper behavior on the part of his/her team’s fans
  • Be responsible for his/her team for all the above

Friendly competition and good-spirited rivalry are expected, however:

  • Officials and supervisors are university employees and will not tolerate verbal abuse or physical threats from or amongst players, captains or spectators
  • Inappropriate conduct can result in penalties ranging from game ejection to lifetime suspension to calling DPS.

A Sportsmanship Rating system will be implemented to provide better transparency between players and Intramural Staff:

  • Ratings start at an ‘A’ and can go down to a ‘D’
  • A team must have a ‘B’ average to be eligible for the play-offs, regardless of their win/loss record
  • A signature from team captains must be obtained after each game, acknowledging the rating, as well giving the supervisor an opportunity to explain the reasoning behind the rating

During playoffs, a team receiving a sportsmanship rating lower than a ‘B’ will not be allowed to advance regardless of victory

Infractions

  1. The official has the power to warn, declare side out or point, or disqualify any player from the game who is behaving in an unsportsmanlike manner
  2. Profanity, verbal, and/or physical threats directed at any other players or officials will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from competition

Any participant dismissed for misconduct must leave the facility immediately.

  • Failure to comply will result in a team forfeiture of the game and a call to DPS will be made.
  • Any player ejected from a game for misconduct will not be allowed to participate in the next played contest, or in any Fitness and Recreation event thereafter, until he/she has met with the Intramural Supervisor.
  • The Intramural Supervisor reserves the right to change and/or modify any rules relevant to TWU Fitness and Recreation Intramural Sports Program.

Forfeits

Game time is forfeit time:

  • According to the officials or student supervisors watch
  • One forfeit during the season automatically removes you from playoffs and possibly from the rest of the season (unless the Intramural Supervisor says otherwise)
  • Each team is allowed only one Notification of a default to the Intramural Supervisor before noon on the day of play will result in a loss but will not result in removal from playoffs, and possibly the rest of the season
  • Team must have at least four players with appropriate identification, appropriate attire, signed in on the score sheet, and ready to play prior to game time to avoid forfeit

Accident Insurance

The State of Texas and Texas Woman’s University cannot accept liability for injuries. Participants are encouraged to provide their own accident or personal insurance.

Blood Rule

A player with a bloody injury or blood on his/her uniform must leave the game. The player may not return to the game until the wound is no longer bleeding, the wound is sufficiently covered (preferably by a trained individual), or all pieces of the uniform that have blood on them are removed and replaced.
