Promotion and Tenure
Tenure is the status granted to a college faculty member after an initial probationary period in their career, determined by their achievements in research, teaching, and service.
As the tenure year approaches, faculty members compile a comprehensive electronic narrative showcasing evidence, context, and explanations of their achievements in research, teaching, and service. Evaluating for tenure involves assessing not only past accomplishments but also potential for future scholarly productivity and excellence. In the tenure process, the rigor, placement, impact, and frequency of a faculty member’s research are critically evaluated.
To evaluate a faculty member’s teaching, reviewers may examine items such as student evaluations from each semester, feedback from peers and supervisors, mentoring efforts, professional development in pedagogical skills, and other relevant factors. Service contributions should encompass committee work within the unit (division/department), college (school/college), and university, leadership roles in professional associations, editorial reviews for academic journals and books, guest lectures, workshops, board memberships, and/or similar activities. The tenure application and review process spans nearly a year, culminating in the Board of Regents vote in July.
