Sample Statements for First Year Faculty Self-Assessment
The statements provided below are suggestions and are intended to serve as a guide to help in crafting your self-assessment. Please feel free to adapt the content and expand on the statements to better reflect your individual experiences, accomplishments and goals during your first year as a faculty member. OPENING STATEMENT
Since my faculty appointment in [Month, Year], I have actively participated in various orientation activities, engaged in teaching, research, and service opportunities, and greatly appreciate the support provided by the University and my colleagues in the [Department/Division name].
TEACHING
My first semester course load consists of XX courses: XX are undergraduate and XX are graduate. I have XX students in each course.
The courses are progressing as planned, and student performance is meeting expectations.

With the timing of this review, the normal feedback mechanisms (student course evaluations, peer and administration teaching observations, etc.) are not yet available to me. However, I conducted a mid-semester student survey to gather feedback, and I am pleased that the majority of responses were positive. For the 2 items on which students expressed some concerns, I have made changes in my teaching approach (explain) and provided a better explanation of my intent and actions on the other. I will await the University course evaluations before considering additional changes.
SCHOLARSHIP
