TWU student receives National Puerto Rican Day Parade Scholarship

6/14/22 – DENTON - Texas Woman's University student Fabiola Gonzalez-Zeno has been named a recipient of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade Scholarship.

Gonzalez-Zeno won the $2,000 grant in large part due to her work in medical interpreting. Medical interpreters translate medical information to physicians and healthcare providers who are evaluating and treating patients who cannot speak or understand English.

Gonzalez-Zeno is a communication sciences and disorders student at TWU, with a minor in Spanish. She studied medical interpreting as part of her Spanish studies, and it was that Spanish minor that made Gonzalez-Zeno eligible for the scholarship and qualified to be a medical interpreter.

As part of her Spanish coursework at TWU, she took the Garcia-Shilling test, which is an industry-specific language assessment. Gonzalez-Zeno is certified to work as a medical interpreter.

Only 100 National Puerto Rican Day Parade scholarships were awarded nationwide.
