Nov. 21, 2025 — DENTON — Following the launch of the BA in Spanish Translation and Interpreting (Medical) and the Spanish Club, TWU has restarted its chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the national collegiate Hispanic honor society.

Emily Rojas, Rachel Hernandez, Karyme Flores and Ahinoam Alba were inducted in a ceremony Nov. 19 for the Xi Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi. Sendy Rhone, PhD and assistant professor of Spanish, was inducted as an honorary member.

Sigma Delta Pi is a selective, nationally recognized honor society, and membership reflects academic excellence and sustained engagement in the field. Students must meet national requirements, including:

  • Completing advanced coursework in Spanish
  • Maintaining a 3.0 GPA in all Spanish courses
  • Ranking in the upper 35% of their class or holding a 3.2 cumulative GPA
  • Completing at least three semesters of college-level work

Sigma Delta Pi recognizes students who excel academically, demonstrate leadership and engage deeply with Hispanic culture.

The return of Sigma Delta Pi has been a goal of Angela Mooney, PhD, assistant professor and the Spanish program coordinator and faculty advisor.

“Spanish Club has become an important space on campus, especially for our heritage speakers, a place where students feel represented and connected,” Mooney said. “But I also wanted our highest-achieving students, especially those who have invested so much in advanced Spanish studies, to have a form of recognition that reflects their academic accomplishments. With both the Spanish Club and Sigma Delta Pi active, we have a wonderful balance: a place for community and belonging, and a place to celebrate excellence.”

An induction ceremony will be held in the Spring.

“We’re already brainstorming ideas for next semester, supporting our Spanish Film Festival, organizing community service and expanding our outreach to Denton’s Spanish-speaking communities,” Mooney said.
