May 14, 2024 — DENTON — Associate Professor Aimée Myers, PhD, of Literacy and Learning, was awarded the H. Prentice Baptiste Outstanding Teaching for Postsecondary Faculty Award from the Texas chapter of the National Association of Multicultural Education.

The award recognizes her commitment to culturally responsive teaching practices. She created a new student organization centered around empowering students so they can empower others one day. She also used teaching practices such as testimonios and digital storytelling to pair with her research on fostering inclusive environments.

Fittingly, when reflecting on the award ceremony Myers thought of her own first teachers and those she teaches.

“The best part was having my parents there. Neither of them have a college degree, but they were definitely my first teachers,” Myers said. “It was also a huge honor to have some of my students at the award ceremony. My students are my why in everything I do.”

Myers strives to make sure all learners feel empowered and have a sense of belonging.

“Students have to see actions and not just words to feel that. Not just talk the talk but also walk the walk,” Myers said. “Our stories matter and I want my students to know that I will amplify their voices however I can.”
